IMMIGRATION-PROTEST.jpg

After a closed-door meeting last Thursday in which President Obama met with nearly 100 immigrant rights leaders to discuss the progress being made on the president’s campaign promises concerning immigration reform, a large coalition of over 500 organizations signed an open letter criticizing the lack of commitment and the inactivity on the issue by the Obama administration. The organizations are “deeply alarmed” that Obama has now begun to voice support for the controversial 287(g) enforcement program that was initiated by the Bush administration. They assert that 287(g) has put public safety at risk by encouraging local law enforcement officials to “justify and intensify racial profiling.” The organizations are planning vigils and marches across the country to protest Obama’s support of the policy.
