Shoo, Fly, Don’t Bother Me

Scaptia (Plinthina) beyoncae insects Horse Fly beyonce

A previously unnamed species of horse fly, which is said to have an exquisite golden lower abdomen, has very recently been christened with the name Scaptia (Plinthina) beyoncae by Bryan Lessard, he of the Australian National Insect Collection. If the latin word “beyoncae” has a certain ring to it like you’ve heard it before, you have. “It was the unique dense golden hairs on the fly’s abdomen that led me to name this fly in honour of the performer Beyonce,” said Lessard in a statement, “as well as giving me the chance to demonstrate the fun side of taxonomy – the naming of species.” We cannot imagine when the insect man was ever permitted to inspect the dense golden hairs on the notoriously private Beyonce’s lower abdomen.
