So. Much. Amazing. News.
Gather round, hunties, because we’re going to have the best kiki of your life right now! RuPaul’s DragCon 2017 is a wrap and while we’re all sad the good times are over, the end of this weekend brought about some of the most exciting news EVER.
First things first, RuPaul delivered the best surprise ever during his keynote speech… DragCon is coming to New York City!
“We’re excited to bring DragCon to NYC where our queens will prance proudly in the city of Stonewall, under the watchful eye of the fiercest queen of all – Lady Liberty,” World of Wonder co-founder Fenton Bailey added.
Under Lady Liberty’s watchful eye, we’re going to be sashaying our way to the east coast for the weekend of Sept 30 and Oct 1.
DragCon tickets go on sale May 12, so set those reminders now, hunties!
Next up is the fact that RuPaul’s Drag Con 2017 has historic numbers in the amount of people that attended the event. Over 40,000 people were there during the course of two days. That’s insane! That means 40,000 beautiful, brilliant, like-minded people spent their weekend with us trying to find their tribe, meet their favorite queens, buy so much swag, and just lived their best lives.
Some of those 40,000 people in attendance happened to be a reporter from the LA Times, Kevin O’Keefe from Mic. stopped by and wrote about RuPaul’s brilliant keynote, and ETOnline posted an exclusive interview with Jerry O’Connell about his time at the convention!
So, if you were one of those 40,000 people, from the bottom of our hearts, we want to thank you so much for coming. If you couldn’t make it, no bigs. There’s always NYC in Sept/Oct. or how about…
RuPaul’s DragCon in the Spring of 2018! Did you really think we’d throw two DragCons in 2017 and throw NONE in 2018? Hell to the NO, squirrel friends. DragCon is still gonna rock it in 2018. Don’t you WORRY!
So, what’s going to happen in New York City and return to LA next year?
Well, we don’t know for certain just yet, but if it’s anything like the highlights of this year, you can expect to have your wigs snatched y’all.
The introduction of the Kid’s Zone was a smash hit, proving that DragCon truly is a family friendly experience for all. From Michelle Tea’s Drag Queen story hour to giving kids their own interactive area to run around and, well, be kids, it was a smashing success all around.
If we could sum up the way attending DragCon made us feel, it would be what the World of Wonder co-founder Randy Barbato said of the experience. “The expressions of love, family and imagination that flooded the LA Convention Center this past weekend made RuPaul’s DragCon the happiest and most fabulous place on Earth.”
Another reason DragCon was the most fabulous place on Earth?
The fact that those more than 40,000 attendees got to meet their favorite Queens from Alaska 5000 to Bob the Drag Queen to Kim Chi to Katya, Trixie Mattel, and SO MANY MORE! Talk about a dream come true.
The weekend was also filled with incredible panels, hilarious talks, and one such Jerry O’Connell being made into a drag queen named Anya Mann by the incomparable Ginger Minj. Trust us, you want to watch that panel when it goes live on WOWPresents!
From more serious talks like “Teen Vogue: What is Drag in Trump’s America” to a chat about LGBTQ visibility in the media with young actors Mark Indelicato (Ugly Betty) to Noah Galvin (The Real O’Neals) and Michael Willett (Faking It) fans were treated to an education and an enlightening this weekend.
Last but not least, the 210,000 square foot exhibit floor was filled with booths ranging from the ACLU to Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics to Planned Parenthood to Jeffree Star Cosmetics and so much more. You name it, they were probably there.
“At RuPaul’s DragCon, we celebrate all the colors of the rainbow.”
“We have an orange president that wraps himself in red, white and blue,” RuPaul continued. “How are you going to make America great again if you can’t love all the colors of the rainbow?”
Poignant and important words coming from our fearless founder of DragCon. So, what are you waiting for?
