Paul Benedict, the actor who played English neighbor Harry Bentley on the sitcom The Jeffersons from 1975 to 1985, was discovered dead Monday on Martha’s Vineyard by his brother Charles. Authorities are investigating the cause. He was 70. Apart from his role on the popular sitcom, he was a mainstay on the legitimate stage for 43 years, appearing in nine Pinter plays. Benedict began his acting career in the 1960s in the Theatre Company of Boston, alongside such future stars as Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman, and Al Pacino. A reporter last year asked Benedict what he would do when was able to get some time away from the theater. “Suicide,” he said. (Broadway World)
