    Sex Change Hospital Tonight

    Monday, November 17, 2008 08:00 PM

    Schimage
If Sex Change Hospital were a serialized TV drama, tonight would be called the thrilling conclusion. But it's a docuseries so we call tonight's sixth and final installment a finale. In the episode, Emeri Burke, a 20-year-old male-to-female college student, wants to have her surgery before the fall semester begins at school; and Donna Richards, formerly Donald, is a truck driver who comes to the hospital for male-to-female genital reassignment surgery. And as usual, Dr Marci Bowers, the former Mark Bowers, will perform the procedures in Trinidad, a little town in Colorado known as the "Sex Change Capital of the World." The hourlong episode airs tonight at 11PM on WeTV.

    Sex Change Hospital Tonight

    Monday, November 10, 2008 07:02 PM

    Drbowerstvguide
TV Guide has an interview today with Dr Marci Bowers, the OB-GYN who's performed more than 550 sexual reassignment surgeries in Trinidad, Colorado, the "Sex-Change Capital of the World." The interview coincides with tonight's fourth episode of World of Wonder's six-part docuseries, Sex Change Hospital, airing at 11PM on WeTV. Bowers herself is transgender, which she says "gives me a greater degree of empathy. I know how important it is to align the body with the soul, so to speak. For me, it makes perfect sense. I know where they're at now, where they've been and where they're going. ...These are interesting, normal, productive people who happen to be transgender. Their stories are real, and it really comes forward. They're just looking for acceptance and continuity between their spirits and their bodies."

    Sex Change Hospital Gets Around

    Thursday, October 16, 2008 05:14 AM

Plenty of good reviews for World of Wonder's six hourlong installments of Sex Change Hospital, airing Tuesdays at 11Pm on WeTV.

The Hollywood Reporter's Ray Richmond calls it "entertainingly graphic, visually as well as verbally.... The people in the opener who remove the veil from their lives for the camera are almost shockingly open, which is no accident considering the program's pedigree. It comes from the World of Wonder team of Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, who have become something of the grand gurus of broad-minded content. Their past projects include the likes of "Inside Deep Throat," "The Joy of Cleavage" and "Secrets of the Sexually Satisfied Woman" as well as acclaimed docs about Tammy Faye Meisner and Anna Nicole Smith." (More)

Max Silvestri of Vh1's Best Week Ever talked about the show, sort of, on Best Night Ever:

But our favorite mention comes from this MSNBC story on Dumb by Linda Holmes: "The WE network recently debuted a show called 'Sex Change Hospital.' It may be a good show. It may be an interesting show. Nevertheless, the title sounds like an imaginary soap opera that would have been Joey’s worst job ever on an episode of 'Friends.' Close your eyes. You can imagine it right now, can’t you?"

    Sex Change Hospital Premieres Tonight

    Tuesday, October 14, 2008 04:17 AM

Tonight at 11PM on WeTV, World of Wonder's six-part series Sex Change Hospital has its US premiere. The series, which first aired in the UK, is exactly what the title would lead you to believe, and in tonight's part one, you'll meet Dr Marci Bowers, the former Mark Bowers, who performs an estimated 100 male-to-female and female-to-male procedures a year in her practice in Trinidad, Colorado, "the sex-change capital of the world." Above, is the Sex Change Hospital segment that aired on Entertainment Tonight last night, and here's an excerpt from David Hinckley's review in today's New York Daily News:

"For some, the high hurdles will come in two areas of this documentary-style report: first, the whole idea of transgendering, and second, some fairly graphic details about what's removed and what's added for patients going in either direction. On the other hand, the human part of the story – the things that patients and the people in their lives go through – provides familiar dramas about conflict, doubt and reconciliation. Often touching, those stories can resonate with everyone."

No Matter How You Slice It, Men Do Better Than Women

    Monday, October 06, 2008 05:04 AM

    Wageinequality
An innovative new study of pay inequity between men and women looked at transgender employees in the workplace and found that women who become men (known as FTMs) do significantly better than men who become women (MTFs). MTFs in the study earned, on average, 32% less after they transitioned from male to female, even after the authors of the study controlled for factors like education levels. FTMs earned an average of 1.5% more. Former WOW employee Afsheen Family thought this might be of WOW Report interest since the World of Wonder-produced Sex Change Hospital premieres next Tuesday at 11PM on WEtv. And he was right. Sex Change Hospital Still Operating

    Monday, September 08, 2008 07:54 PM

    Sexchangehospstill
CBS just got around to doing a story about Dr Marci Bowers and Trinidad, Colorado, known globally as the "sex-change capital of the world," on its most recent CBS Sunday Morning show. It was two years ago that the World of Wonder crew went to Trinidad to shoot its acclaimed six-part Sex Change Hospital docuseries, which aired in 2007 on Channel 4 in the UK, and subsequently on TV in Sweden and Brazil. Those who bemoaned its absence from TV in the US can take heart now that it's set to air in the country where it's set. Beginning October 14, Sex Change Hospital will air at 11PM on WEtv. (Sex Change Hospital on MySpace; t/y Moye for the heads-up)

Jim Howley, one of the eight bachelors competing for Calpernia Addams' affections on Monday night's new dating series Transamerican Love Story, phoned into the World of Wonder offices to dish the dirt on what it was like to be 'outed' as a transgendered man himself, in the first twenty minutes of the premiere episode no less. Eagle-eyed viewers, however, may remember Jim previously disclosing his not-so-secret gender switch on another WOW production: Sex Change Hospital. Notes on Sex Change

    Monday, September 10, 2007 11:26 PM

    Beardedwoman5Ws6-1
Excerpt from a review of WOW's Sex Change Hospital docuseries in the UK, from I'm the Other Dave:

"Everyone has a right to be an individual and comfortable in their own body. Some folk, however, like those on 'Sex Change Hospital', just abuse the bloody privilege. If I were to say that two grown men, last eve, removed their dinkles, became women, and then started a lesbian affair, would you believe me? Well, hopefully, yes. This is the 21st century, after all, you blasted prudes! If I were to tell you that the very same two lesbian trans-genders teamed up as a 'Cagney and Lacey' style duo in the weekend to fight crime, would you still have faith in my musings? In all honesty, I don't even believe myself. Unfortunately, 'Sex Change' hospital is a reality. It is a serious show what deals with the cold, hard facts of this world in which we live. There are two dyke, balless muscle Marys molesting innocent criminals in the U.S. as we speak. The mind certainly boggles."
