With the comic book movie craze practically dominating Hollywood over the past decade, why HASN’T there been a female superhero movie yet? That’s what Monday night’s episode of PBS’s Independent Lens asked along with some other thought-provoking questions. It goes without saying there’ve been multiple heroic females leads over the years from Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley to Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Conner all they way to Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen. And yet, no Wonder Woman movie, no Supergirl movie, and no Catwoman movie. Halle Berry’s Catwoman doesn’t count because it’s the worst thing ever. One would think that after the ridiculous success of The Hunger Games (it grossed nearly 700 million worldwide) it would be a logical next step to bring a superheroine to the silver screen. But no. The closest we’ve come are the ladies from the X-Men franchise or Black Widow in The Avengers. But they’re part of ensemble casts. So, what’s it gonna take for Hollywood to see that it’s OK to have a lead FEMALE character dress in a spangley outfit while at the same time kicking ass and fighting for justice? If it’s fear of the costume looking too old fashioned, I counter that argument with Chris Evans in Captain America.
