Synopsis
It's a fact: the public can't get enough of all things Michael Jackson...good or bad. The trial against him is a major pop culture event. But the most memorable moments are taking place outside the courtroom...
CAMP MICHAEL JACKSON takes a closer look at the people outside the courthouse--the devoted fans who will support Michael Jackson no matter what. These seven die-hard fans will struggle through financial hardship, life-threatening illness, hateful protestors, and even their own differences to show the King of Pop that Neverland is still magical.
BJ HICKMAN
BJ dropped out of high school in Tennessee and jumped on a bus for 5 days to be in Santa Maria supporting Michael. Since then BJ has spent every day in front of the courthouse, screaming his lungs out for his idol. A "celebrity" among the fans, BJ is not afraid to lead the charge against Michael's detractors.
SUSIE MUMPFIELD
Susie quit her job performing as Pluto at Disneyland and moved up to Santa Maria to support her idol. Her day begins at 4:00am in order to get into court and ends at midnight following a shift at a local fast food restaurant. Her struggles to pay rent have sometimes resulted in meals consisting only of hot sauce on her finger, or water with sugar.
EVALIE HORNER
Evalie is a doctoral candidate who wrote her master's thesis about Michael Jackson. She's shooting a fan-documentary about the trial and funding her stay with an inheritance, but finds herself taking on more responsibility as she considers paying the rent for other fans.
CORRIE BRYSON
Corrie, a Choir Director and single mother of 8, is a lifelong resident of Santa Maria, who attends the trial every day because she wants to be a part of history. Her new schedule means she's gone in the morning before her children wake up, which Corrie feels is teaching them to be more independent. But it also means she has less time to take care of the house and spend with her family, which is causing its share of tension.
NAYIRI TORIGIAN
Nayiri is battling two types of cancer and undergoing intensive chemotherapy treatment. The constant hospital visits are preventing her from attending the trial. When a doctor cancels an appointment, she gathers the strength to travel to Santa Maria with her mother in hopes of meeting Michael Jackson.
SAM DAVIDSON
Sam is a charismatic British university student who is skipping a final exam and going into debt to support Michael. He's brought his fiancee, a union jack, and a giant banner that reads "Stay Strong MJ."
SHEREE WILKINS
Sheree gave up her job as a kindergarten teacher to move to Santa Maria where she lives out of a motel and works nights at a fast food restaurant in order to attend Michael's trial in the daytime. She tries to see the best in people and has become fast friends with Susie.
