The Last Beekeeper

Bees are vanishing. Examining the enormity of this loss, Jeremy Simmons' documentary The Last Beekeeper follows the lives of three commercial beekeepers (from South carolina, Montana, and Washington) over the course of a year as they struggle with Colony Collapse Disorder. When they take their bees to California's enormous annual almond pollination (an event so large it requires nearly all the bees in the US), it becomes painfully and poignantly clear the bind they are in. "If all the bees die, what do you have to live for?" asks one of the beekeepers. It's a question for all of us.

Jeremy Simmons' buzz-worthy documentary The Last Beekeeper, a World of Wonder film produced by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, had its world  premiere at the SXSW film festival on March 14, 2009.

Cinematography: Sebastian Jungwirth, David Kempner, Jeremy Simmons, Goro Toshima, Pyongson Yim

With the exciting news that World of Wonder's The Last Beekeeper has been nominated for Outstanding Nature Programming by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, might we be the first to suggest a buzzworthy opening number for the 62nd Emmy Awards come August. Host Jimmy Fallon as Maryanne, Neil Patrick Harris as Ginger, and Ellen Degeneres as Lovey Howell aka The Honey Bees.

It's OK to Watch the Emmys Now

    Thursday, July 15, 2010 12:00 PM

It's a shame and a real oversight that still gnaws at this blogger that the Emmys snubbed RuPaul's Drag Race in the reality nominations this year in favor of the same five shows that get nominated by rote every year. But that's almost forgiven now that Jeremy Simmons' gorgeous and informative World of Wonder documentary The Last Beekeeper that aired on Planet Green has been Emmy-nominated for Outstanding Nature Programming. It really is a honey of a doc. So we'll keep our fingers crossed while congratulating Simmons and the doc's producers Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey. (Emmy Online)

    Lord of the Stings

Jeremy Simmons, director of the World of Wonder-produced documentary The Last Beekeeper, was constantly injured in the line of duty – by his actors! The film screens at the Los Angeles Film Festival on Saturday, June 20, at 2:30PM at the Regent, and on Thursday, June 25, at 4:45PM at the Landmark 4. It's got lots of buzz. Simmons might be somewhat more difficult to recognize these days without the bee-sting swellings on his mug, but he'll be the one introducing the film on both days and conducting Q&As afterward.

Also: Planet Green, the Discovery offshoot that specializes in environmentally friendly programming, has acquired Simmons' The Last Beekeeper to air as part of its "Reel Impact" series on Sept 12. And seriously, he doesn't look like that anymore.

    Doin’ It For the Kids

    Doin’ It For the Kids

Austin loves the Bees. Young Texan artist Sloan Burns presented this piece of work to me at Tuesday night's sold-out screening of The Last Beekeeper at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin. There is a certain amount of interpretation involved (as with the best art), but I think we are looking at a very sick bee with a thermometer reading 7 (which is like 105 for humans). She signed it on the back “to jeremy from bees – thank you for helping the bees.  you did an awesome job.  thank you.” Thank you, Sloan.
