If you haven’t heard by now, NYC’s newest QUEEN of Hip Hop, Michael David Quattlebaum aka Mykki Blanco, is taking OVAH!!! Most of the posts on Mykki tend to focus on her being a drag queen or cross-dresser, but they’re really missing the point. Blanco is a lyrical genius with pure, primitive beats as raw as any “traditional” rapper in the last 20 years…minus the heterosexual hegemony. Check out her new EP Mykki Blanco & The Mutant Angels, and if you’re in New York City you can see her live Thursday, May 17, at My Chiffon Is Wet at Eastern Bloc, 505 East 6th Street.

New York City lo-fi electro kiddies House of Blondes just sent us their latest video “Slow Motion Tourist.” It’s kinda an homage to the recent Space Shuttle Enterprise landing in New York, but really a commentary on how troglodyte tourists have really rotted out the Big Apple. For foreigners that ain’t 50, they act like they forgot how to act! Ha!

Few artists today have the capacity to leave their listeners both feeling fulfilled and wanting more. The debut album from musical act Kindness aka Adam Bainbridge, World, You Need a Change of Mind, takes a romantic stab at putting us bitter, disconnected social-media addicts back into affection rehab, and on the road to real intimacy recovery. Having grown up in London, with jaunts to Berlin, the somewhat reclusive Bainbridge has emerged with a clear perspective on compassion. Inspired by ’70s disco and dance music by Niles Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder, and Afrika Bambaataa, what’s remarkable about Kindness is his willingness to share his unconventional romantic journey with music. With co-producer Philippe Zdar (Cassius) in tow, this album evidences a relationship that is truly genuine, open, unselfishly raw, and unconditionally unyielding. Submit to Kindness, and let the superficial pass you by.
PAISLEY DALTON: Are you a recluse, or perhaps a social mediaphobe?
ADAM BAINBRIDGE: It’s a question of is there a right time to talk and is there a wrong time. I really felt that having too many conversations at too early a point, when there was no music, would be a waste of time for everyone. That led to me being pursued as a reclusive, and that’s not true! Some people think it’s aloof or this self-created mythology….
DALTON: But you have no Facebook, Twitter, or even a website.
BAINBRIDGE: I think those things are completely unnecessary. If people who feel similarly to me notice those things aren’t there smacking you around the face, perhaps they [will] appreciate being allowed the breathing space to discover things on their own, without being pre-packaged and [without] these preconceptions being delivered to you. A Facebook page is not a particularly attractive way of presenting any kind of information.

Clean Cuts, the debut lo-fi release from ambient electro-trio, House of Blondes, is a hypnotically minimal album, filled with light, airy vocals, analog chords, and solid drums. Inspired by Wolfgang Voit’s ’90s techno project, Gas, House of Blondes recorded all of their tracks in one or two takes, using pre-existing sounds to create new ones. Don’t, however, think that the band’s improvisatory method is indicative of a half-hearted effort: “There’s an enormous amount of preparation leading to that free moment,” says band member John Blonde.
THE VIDEOS: [Blonde:] Obsession is one of the most fascinating things you can film. Our videos are like that: the music points to something that might seem casual to one person, but is actually an entire world for somebody else. “Do It Yourself (Landscape)” was an homage to Luke Smalley, a photographer that took kids from high schools and photographed them in old-fashioned uniforms inside gyms and on old exercise equipment. All of his stuff has a haunted quality— [it’s] from the past, but filmed in contemporary life. When he died, I wanted to pay tribute to him, so I came up with the idea of doing a video with a bunch of boys working out. There is this underlying homoeroticism to it, but there’s also a nice elegance. I’m not afraid to say it’s “erotic,” but that was not my intention. DJ Paisley Dalton’s meteoric rise continues! Her latest release, My Chiffon Is Wet Eastern Bloc Sessions Vol 1, is sort of the heartbeat to her smashing weekly party My Chiffon Is Wet at Eastern Bloc bar in NYC. Starting off with the latin groove No Hay Ritmo, you get the feeling that yr deep in the heart of Alphabet City and Jorge is DTF. Nu Disco darlings Jessica 6 and Azari & III make the cut with 90s inspired dance floor burners Prisoner of Love and Manic. And London horn players Hackney Colliery Band serve up a sickening marching re-imagining of R&B group Backstreet’s No Diggity. Plus, there’s tons of chunky classic 70s vocal jewels for the retro kiddies. But if u wanna hear the tunes live, you better come early, or stay late…the heart of MCW is full of campy pop topics, show tunes and other absolutely fey beats for diehard twirlers and exhibitionists! Sam Sparro’s been MIA for a minute, searching for the “answers in the sky” that inspired his hit single “Black and Gold “ back in 2008. After dashing back and forth between LA and London, Sparro has finally churned out his next dance floor anthem “Happiness.” The uptempo, piano-laden groove shows Sparro doin what he knows best, uplifting, passion-driven, ’90s-inspired soul music and wailing vocals which serve as the aural template for his relentless quest for love. Sounds a bit fantastical, especially when Sam has clearly found happiness and unconditional true love in unashamedly fun music. Check out remix of nu track “Happiness” exclusively here and his “Return to Paradise” show this Thursday at Largo at the Coronet Theatre. (via ZeitgeistWorld)

U.N.I.T.Y! Looks like we all can get along after all! Canadian foursome Azari & III have been about for a minute now, working it out on separate projects since the late ’80s. And now all that precisionist DJ churning, drum machine tweaking, and soulfully sassed vocals by Fritz (and his wig) and Starving Yet Full (aka Cedric) have ended up in nu disco/house mutant beat burner Manic and the release of their debut album which is chucked full of snappy electro percussion. The perfect soundtrack for your savage grace. Check out video below and full album stream HERE.

Here’s my latest free download mixtape Voyage. This time around, I’ve ditched all the over-produced quick stabs and effects gimmicks (mostly), choosing instead to adopt pleasingly slick tracks that build gradually and take you on a full 120-minute journey through nu disco sound. Some surprises here, “For That” track by Pauly D (that’s right…Jersey Shore!), “Far Nearer” by Jamie xx of the emotive English indie pop band The xx and my own eerie rework of Donna Summer/Barbra Streisand’s disco track “No More Tears (Enough is Enough)” – renamed “Tears.” Perfect for a drive-by booty call…or maybe just a slow-mo homo romp on the beach.
