At a time when several more states (Washington, New Jersey, and Illinois) have decided to push for marriage equality for gay and lesbians, our so-called “fierce advocate” of a president still refuses to support full equality or “evolve” past his bigoted religious beliefs that marriage is a sacred union meant only for a man and a woman. This has been a bone of contention for many LGBT advocates. Why should the gay community give the president our full support when he refuses to support our full equality? The White House press corps has recently begun querying Obama’s press secretary over the fact that the President’s position on marriage equality is the same as Rick Santorum’s! And now even House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has begun nudging the president to support full marriage equality for gay and lesbian Americans. In a new interview with The Advocate, Pelosi refused to give specifics about her conversations with the president and their discussions on LGBT issues, but said, “I hope the president would just say he supports equality in marriage.” But as usual, the only thing coming out of the White House in regard to the issue of marriage equality is a deafening silence.
