One Direction Hits the US Charts with a Bullet

According to Billboard magazine: “Vocal group One Direction makes waves on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart this week as its ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ debuts at No. 28. It’s the highest bow for a U.K. act’s debut U.S. single in nearly 14 years.” The last British act to debut higher was the Spice Girls’ “Wannabe” which landed at number 11 in 1997 and “Bittersweet Symphony” by the Verve, which debuted at number 13 in 1998. But One Direction’s leap is even more amazing when you realize it’s basically just word of mouth (and bloggable faces) that got them there. Columbia Records doesn’t even officially drop the song in America until next week. That’s when the real push to get them airplay starts. And that’s probably around the time I get bored with them. But in the meantime OMG YAY! Let’s watch the behind-the-scenes for “What Makes You Beautiful.” (t/y Kieth)
