Keeping the Relationship Fresh

Vacuum Sealed Tokyo Photography In the Bag Haruhiko Kawaguchi Couples Art

Vacuum-sealed couples. Japanese photographer Haruhiko Kawaguchi spends 10-20 seconds photographing couples he meets in nightclubs and takes back to his kitchen in Tokyo. He arranges the couples like pieces of meat inside bags meant to store futons and blankets, sealing their conjoined bodies inside the bags using a regular vacuum cleaner to suck out all the air. For this project he calls “Flesh Love,” he’s photographed over 80 couples. He says the men panic more often than the women, a few have struggled for air while in the bag, and one man pissed himself. The women, he says, just want to look good.
