Iowa Knocks Out NOM

The citizens of Iowa have just kicked The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) to the curbside. NOM has been funneling out-of-state campaign cash to the tune of $86,000 for tv and radio ads to the local Republican anti- marriage equality candidate, Stephen Burgmeier, in the special election to fill the state legislative seat. The Iowa Ethics board had sent a letter to NOM warning that their Iowa election activities were being monitored. “NOM’s last minute, and desperate campaign directly violates Iowa law and is right out of their deceitful playbook,” said Carolyn Jenison, Executive Director of One Iowa. “NOM has a history of funneling secret money to fund divisive political campaigns across the country with little regard for laws allowing voters to know who is bankrolling those campaigns.” And it looks like Iowa’s state agencies aren’t the only ones who can see through NOM’s hateful deceit. Democrat Curt Hanson defeated the NOM-backed Republican 3,932 to 3,825. The special election was seen as a test indicator on whether marriage equality could be used as a wedge issue in the state.
