As threatened, Deep Throat is set to open in the UK in conjunction with Inside Deep Throat, the doc about it. It will be the first time the porn film will have been screened in legitimate British cinemas, beginning at the Everyman in Hampstead on June 10 and 11, and then moving to more UK screens after that. According to The Sun, admission requirements will stop just short of asking for a passport.

Deep Throat is only the second film shown in Britain to be rated R18 because of its content – until now it has only been seen in sex cinemas. In addition to the top rating there is a special procedure to purchase tickets – people have to provide proof of age and address at the cinema 24 hours before the screening.

To Russia With Lovelace

Inside Deep Throat had its first international release earlier this month, in Moscow at the Dome Theater, one of several movie houses located in what might be called luxury hotels there. (Click here to see a review of the Dome and other cinemas in the city.) We would have reported this before, but the WOW Report is still trying to get info on the film's reception by Muscovites, and perhaps a review from Pravda's Arts & Leisure section. So far, nyet luck.

A cinema in "Penta Renaissance" hotel. Interesting design of the hall, movies always in original language translated in Russian through headphones. Good quality dolby surround sound. Nice, but slightly overpriced restaurants and cafes in the lobby.

Address: Olimpiski prospekt, #18/1 "Renaissance in Moscow" hotel, tel. 931-9873 (answering)

Area: North Center of Moscow, Prospekt Mira metro (circle). It's better to take a car from the metro for 30 R ($1), say you need "Penta Renaissance" hotel.

Yesterday the film opened in Singapore and, interestingly, it received an R21 rating, not only restricting it to those 21 and older but also prohibiting it from running in suburban theaters and disallowing TV and radio advertising "under all time belts." We can only hope the guidelines for screening the doc will be looser when it opens in the time belts of the UK on June 10 and Australia July 6.

The Deep

-Inside Deep Throat-Image

Deep Throat, that seminal porn film, will finally be shown in mainstream British cinemas, not just the sex houses. Previously available only on video and DVD, it's now been given the proper certificate, and will be playing on the bill with Inside Deep Throat in some theaters.

The Duke of York's Picture House in Brighton has lined up late-night weekend screenings and a number of City Screen's cinemas, including those in Liverpool, Edinburgh and Cambridge, are hoping to show it. Jason Wood, a film programmer for the City Screen chain, said this would not start a trend for screening porn films. "Our Brighton cinema is a very on-the-edge, experimental cinema and we show a lot of outré films. We're not going to go down the route of continually playing hardcore films.

"I would say there is no artistic reason for us showing Deep Throat. It is really as a companion piece. Inside Deep Throat does have artistic value and explores some very interesting things, not so much the hardcore pornography but the fact that it later emerged that Linda Lovelace was in a 'slavery' situation."

Time Out London has 180 free tickets to see a preview of Inside Deep Throat at the Vue West End on June 7. Click here for details.

Meanwhile, back in the States, Deep Throat and Inside Deep Throat are spurring debate on college campi. The little Hoff theater at the University of Maryland got surprised.

The movie was advertised by the Hoff as being shown for educational purposes, and we admit we were skeptical the showing and subsequent academic activities would turn out to be just a spectacle under the guise of academia.

But last night, we were proven mostly wrong when about 150 students attended and participated in a panel discussion with three female scholars who discussed the philosophy and morals of the porn industry after the audience watched a documentary, Inside Deep Throat, about the significance of the film. This was a far greater ratio of students than we expected to turn out for the academic side of the pornographic screening, especially considering the drastic disintegration of a panel last year with Porn Star Ron Jeremy and a feminist that quickly became a way for college guys to holler questions at Jeremy about how many women he had actually slept with or how well endowed he was.

Oral Test

"If the men of College Park want some oral sex this weekend, they need only go to the Hoff Theater," says Brendan Lowe in a piece running in Diamondback, the University of Maryland student newspaper. Mollie Wander, the general manager of the Hoff movie theater and a senior criminology major at UM, found Deep Throat "eye-popping" after watching only 10 minutes of it and arranged for it to be shown in conjunction with Inside Deep Throat and organized a panel knowledgeable on women's topics – and exotic dance – to lead a discussion after.

This from Boi from Troy today:

Well, if you want to pine for the good-old days when every block in Van Nuys might bring a revealing surprise, do not fret. "Inside Deep Throat" is now in theaters, documenting the industry in its nacent phases, examining the very issues of freedom of speech, censorship, sex and politics. Plus, they have a blog!
Which reminds us to remind you that a slew of new theaters will begin screening Inside Deep Throat tomorrow.

Off the Deep End

Here are some more pics from the New York premiere of Inside Deep Throat, on the WireImage site.  Pictures of blah, blah, and blah blah.  But, oh, what's this?  A couple of shots of Randy Brian and Harry Fenton?  Who are they?  Did they RSVP?  They seem to have connections, because they're posing with Harry Reems and Brian Grazer.

Classic Linda to Double-Bill with Doc

The new big news is that the original X-rated Deep Throat is being rereleased in theaters across the country to play on late-night double bills with the NC-17 Inside Deep Throat.  It's a marriage made in, um, you could say heaven.  Ray Pistol, who is the current owner / distributor of the original, says he's often had requests from theater owners for a print, but he never found it worthwhile to strike a print for just one theater.  Now, with the widespread interest in the new doc, striking the old film has suddenly become worth it.

Ray Pistol's Las Vegas based company, Arrow Film and Video, currently owns the rights to Deep Throat. Louis Peraino Sr., one of the producer's of Deep Throat, sold the rights to Pistol after many years of battling with law enforcement officials because of his involvement in the adult business. Peraino was convicted of obscenity charges in federal court in Memphis in 1976 and in Miami in 1981. While he was arrested again in 1995 for shipping obscene material from Las Vegas to California, all charges were dropped in March 1996. Peraino sold the rights to Pistol shortly thereafter in August 1996.

In an article in AVN, the Variety of the porn industry, Pistol doesn't talk about his negotiations allowing Brian Grazer to use footage from Deep Throat in Inside Deep Throat, but he says the double bills have nothing to do with Imagine Entertainment.  Rather, he's in cahoots with theater owners.

"Theater owners have called me up and said, 'Will  you give us a print?'  So this is the theater owners that are  putting this together, not Imagine and not me. I got a call out of the blue."  Arrow will be providing both R and XXX versions of the film,  and apparently very little actually had to be cut out to get  the less-restrictive MPAA rating. "If you think back," Pistol  explained, "there wasn't all that much sex back in the '70s  in movies, and so it winds up running 59 minutes. The X-rated  version is 61 to 65, depending on which version you get, and  we added footage to our Special Edition so it winds up being  90."

From Linda's Throat to God's Ear

Seems the New York premiere of Inside Deep Throat at the Paris Theatre in New York tomorrow night will simulate the same kind of chicly eclectic turnout its subject did back in the early 70s.  Rumor has it that the RSVPs are a who's-who of who's who.  We hear that Gwyneth and Chris are going, as well as the likes of Boaty Boatwright, Georgette Mosbacher, the Ron Howards, and Method Man.  The Richard Belzers are expected to show up, along with Ryan Adams and Parker Posey, Peter Bogdanovich, P Diddy, the Coen Brothers, the Evanses (Harry and Tina), not to mention Sandy Gallin and Buck Henry.  And they say that Harry Reems will be there, although he didn't show for Los Angeles.  But, hey, LA had members of Wu Tang Clan.  That's pretty cool, no?

LA Premiere

Flavorpill has a very nice plug today for the LA premiere of Inside Deep Throat tomorrow, February 2, at the Egyptian Theatre as part of the Outfest film festival.  It's at 7:30.  The address is 6712 Hollywood Boulevard (323 466-FILM), and the tickets are $9.

Filmmakers Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey, directors of Party Monster (2003), have turned their lens onto another side of decadence by taking on the cultural impact of Deep Throat. Originally made in 1972 for $25K, the first crossover porno has become one of the most profitable films of all time. Inside Deep Throat traces the captivating history surrounding the flick, from the sexual revolution to the pornography boom and subsequent backlash in America. The filmmakers interview stars Linda Lovelace and Harry Reams, as well as such cultural icons as Gore Vidal, Norman Mailer, and John Waters. After debuting at this year's Sundance festival, this probing documentary makes its LA premiere at the Egyptian tonight. (TCR)

Outfest

INSIDE DEEP THROAT will screen at OUTFEST in Hollywood on Wednesday, February 2 at the Egyptian Theatre.  7:30 PM.

DIRS: Fenton Bailey  Randy Barbato, 2004, USA, 35mm, 90 min.

Academy Award-winning producer Brian Grazer (FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, A BEAUTIFUL MIND, 8 MILE) teams with acclaimed directors Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato (PARTY MONSTER, THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE) on a new motion-picture documentary. INSIDE DEEP THROAT examines the unanticipated lasting cultural impact generated by DEEP THROAT, a sexually explicit film first shown in a midtown Manhattan adult theater in June 1972 that quickly became the flashpoint for an unprecedented social and political firestorm. Generally considered the most profitable film of all time (produced for less than $25,000), DEEP THROAT unexpectedly became a cultural phenomenon at the moment when the nation's movements of sexual liberation, equal rights and questioning authority demanded a combustible focus. The barely one-hour long adult title became compulsory viewing for millions of Americans. More than 30 years later, INSIDE DEEP THROAT examines the chasm between the modest intentions of the filmmakers behind DEEP THROAT and the unforeseen impact and legacy that their film left on society.
