As we now know, we were all too quick to jump to conclusions when we saw the photo of Pete Doherty sticking a needle into the arm of an unconscious fan lying on his kitchen floor. Turns out he wasn’t injecting heroin – or anything – into Laura McEvoy but, rather, he was drawing blood out of her to use as a painting medium. At the time, Doherty was quoted as saying, “It’s a staged shot and what a fucking liberty to suggest I’d bang up a sleeping lass.” Seems Doherty uses human blood (usually his own) to make paintings and now, thanks to all the publicity, he’s having a show at a London gallery. Doherty’s literary agent (yes, literary agent) Paul Roundhill said, “Blood paintings are something he has done for a long time. I think they help explain the photograph of Laura.” And the crazy rocker’s former manager James Mullford, who’s also donated blood, said, “He was very careful, he used a new needle. Pete has become very good at using the syringe, either scratching it onto the paper or spraying an area. It creates an effect a little like a Ralph Steadman cartoon.” So if more fans donate blood for Doherty’s paintings, will the gallery include him in a groupie show?
