Art on the Cheap

99$Artshowlogo
And speaking of mind-blowing art, the World of Wonder Storefront Gallery is about to open its "99$ Only" art show, at which every single piece of art is priced at $99. It's like a 99¢ store without the fluorescent lighting or Chinese toothpaste. Obama's in the White House, but the economy is in the crapper, notes co-curator James St James, so all your favorite WOW gallery artists and some new ones have contributed to this very affordable holiday art sale. Make it a Christmas shopping spree. And in the spirit of the season, a portion of the profits will go to LA's Midnight Mission. The show opens with a festive reception on Thursday, December 4, at 6650 Hollywood Boulevard.

Well, bird-watchers, tonight's the night Clancy Cavnar's one-woman show, "What a Hoot: An Artful Discourse on Owlism in Contemporary Society," opens at the World of Wonder Storefront Gallery at 6650 Hollywood Boulevard in the very heart of Hollywood. Cavnar, you'll remember, is the artist who draws (at least) one owl a day, a mere several of which are shown here. The reception, from 8 to 11PM, will feature owl-themed martinis, owly go-go boys, an owl video installation, and an owl gifting suite.

James Gets High on Art

Jamesuphigh
We have no idea what's going on in this photo, but it appears to be some kind of preparation for tomorrow's opening of "What a Hoot: An Artful Discourse on Owlism in Contemporary Society" at the World of Wonder Storefront Gallery. The usually natty James St James has been rolling up his sleeves of late and wielding all sorts of tools, engaging in all manner of activities – such as the one in this picture – and getting the unfashionable kind of dirty. But you know he'll be spectacular tomorrow. We're guessing something in a feather. (Photo by Thairin Smothers)

It's Owl Good

Apparently, owls are an untapped artistic treasure trove. Until now, that is. With the announcement of the Clancy Cavnar solo show, "What a Hoot: An Artful Discourse on Owlism in Contemporary Society," which opens tomorrow at 8PM at the World of Wonder Storefront Gallery, owls are coming out of the woodwork. Yesterday, we were sent these three stills, below, from videos by Crazy Girl. A gorgeous example of her videos is at the top of this post. "I always put birds in my videos for some reason," she says. "Don't know why, just really like birds!"

Owwwl! That Hurts!

Owlsandboxes
Here are James St James and Terrence Dawson ripping their hands to shreds and inhaling vintage packing straw as they handle and open literally hundreds of boxes of ceramic owls in preparation for the "What a Hoot: An Artful discourse on Owlism in Contemporary Society" show opening in two days at the World of Wonder Storefront Gallery. The boxes had been sitting in a Japanese warehouse since August 15, 1966. The decorative owls were meant for the thoughtful housewife to slip over unsightly spray cans in the bathroom.

Maskandowls
But their lacerations and incipient straw-lung are SO worth it, don't you think? And who's that Wise man in the owl mask? (Photos: top, Thairin Smothers; bottom, James St James)

And Speaking of Owls...

...which we do a lot of lately, Clancy Cavnar, who will be showing her work at the World of Wonder Storefront Gallery's "What a Hoot: An Artful Discourse on Owlism in Contemporary Society" show opening this Thursday, November 13, has collected a list of owl slang found on Urban Dictionary. We had no idea the owl was so urban. We can't remember ever using even one of these expressions.

Radicowl

owleye
the puckered opening of the anus.

owl 69
Owl 69 is when both parters turn their head around 180 degrees and eat out each others buttholes.

owl puffer
One who performs fellatio on a person who has just sodomized them.
Julie was known as a fairly classy dame 'til I found out she was an owl puffer.

owlfucker
One who makes sweet love to owls.
John Ellmore is an owlfucker.

owl shit
extremely slippery
After the dude slipped and fell on the newly waxed floor, he got up and exclaimed "Wow, that floor is slicker than owl shit."

Owljob
A blowjob while the girl's head is at a 90 degree angle.
"I got my first owljob last night."

A Conspiracy of Owls

Don't let these two rather disturbing videos on the wise old owl disconcert you and keep you from enjoying our next exhibit. The many owl drawings on display at the World of Wonder Storefront Gallery's "What a Hoot: An Artful Discourse on Owlism in Contemporary Society" will be the work of artist Clancy Cavnar and will more than likely instill awe rather than fear. The show opens Thursday, November 13 with a delightful cocktail reception. You know, thematically, if the show were in New York, we'd have a big bowl of Wise potato chips in the gallery.

UPDATE: Well, exc-hooooooo-se us! Seems the gallery's ordered a forestful of Wise potato chips from New York.

O Is for Obama Owls

Funkyparliament
What Obama mania? All I see these days is the mounting mass hysteria for Clancy Cavnar's owl paintings! Her solo show: "WHAT A HOOT: AN ARTFUL DISCOURSE ON OWLISM IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY" opens this Thursday, November 13, at the World of Wonder Storefront Gallery. In fact, her passion for those feathered fiends has inspired other WOW artists to come by the gallery with their OWN owl paintings, hoping for a spot on our hallowed and be-owled walls. In the picture below, I'm holding Jay Shutte's contribution, and next to that is the scrumptious owl-fanatic Gino Burman-Loffredo and HIS owl portraits.

Owl Be Seeing You at the World of Wonder Storefront Gallery

Contemplativeowl-1Owlprepares4Winter
Some of you might be asking yourselves, "What's all this fuss about owls over at the World of Wonder Storefront Gallery?" Well, it's simple really. Owls represent mystery, magic and the majesty of the night, dontcha know. And according to Beth Owl's Daughter's website: “The owl is a master of flight and adaptation. She is not a victim, nor an aggressor; she takes the middle path between the hawk and the dove. She does not circle and circle in a restless hunt for prey. She sits in silence – observing, listening, patiently waiting for the exact moment to strike. Her skills are insight and discernment, and she has much to teach us.” So there you have it. And that should get you all lathered up for our show "WHAT A HOOT: AN ARTFUL DISCOURSE ON OWLISM IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY," opening next Thursday, November 13. Now, here for your viewing pleasure are two of the hundreds of owl portraits by the show's solo artist Clancy Cavnar – Contemplative Owl and Owl Prepares 4 Winter.

Owl's Well That Ends Well

Clancyowlvote-1
We leave you today with this sexy owl portrait by Clancy Cavnar, as a sort of bridge between the end of our "Svedka Vodka Presents Hollywood DC: Lights! Camera! Election!" group show in the World of Wonder Storefront Gallery and the onset of our "What a Hoot: An Artful Discourse on Owlism in Contemporary Society" show which begins on Thursday, November 13.

Watch the President Get "Elected"

PoptartselectedIt's officially now a WOW Report tradition that every four years, on the first Tuesday of November, we play this video of the Fabulous Pop Tarts performing their Alice Cooper cover "Elected," an arrangement originally created for MTV's 120 Minutes in 1988, when a George Bush was running against Michael Dukakis. Four years ago, we posted the video when another George Bush was running against John Kerry. This year, we hope you'll join us as we watch the finally Bush-free election results on our state-of-the-art screens in the World of Wonder Storefront Gallery, at 6650 Hollywood Boulevard, where the walls are lined with the hilarious political paintings in our current group show, and where Svedka vodka cocktails will flow free for everyone until a new chief is hailed in Washington. (Svedka, not so incidentally, is voted #1 vodka of 2033.)

Think, Vote, Drink

Jamesinthegallery

James is getting ready for the big election results viewing party in the gallery this Tuesday Nov 4. What better place to watch the votes come in than surrounded by political art. Drink until the booze runs out or we elect a president, whichever comes first!

Montag Pricetag Is Just Right (Wing)

Corfesmontag
Fox News picked up the story of Heidi Montag's giant melons being displayed in the World of Wonder Storefront Gallery's group show, succinctly titled "Svedka Vodka Presents Hollywood DC: Lights! Camera! Election!" WOW Report readers already know that the gallery's co-creator Steven Corfe painted The Hills star (who also co-hosted the show's opening reception with her "boyfriend" Spencer Pratt) in a riff on Shepard Fairey's famous HOPE portrait of Barack Obama. Using Fairey's same color scheme of red, blue, and blah, Corfe painted Montag holding two large melons in front of her own augmented melons above the word GROPE. Was Montag offended? On the contrary. "I am so honored! When I heard about this I seriously almost cried," she exclaimed before forking over $2,000 to buy the piece.

One of the more colorful patrons browsing in the World of Wonder Storefront Gallery today. Of course, you identified the quote on his arm as being Allen Ginsberg's, didn't you. Thairin Smothers, who took this photo, read it as if it were inked in Braille.

The Daily Freak Show

At the opening-night party for the "Svedka Vodka Presents Hollywood DC: Lights! Camera! Election!" show at the World of Wonder Storefront Gallery, James St James is on a quest to interview the night's VIP hosts, Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag. Surprisingly, the mission proves to be more difficult than anticipated. The star-studded crowd also includes RuPaul, Jesse Metcalfe, Project Runway's Santino Rice, Alexis Arquette, Bobby Trendy, Allee Willis, Taryn Manning, Heather from VH1's Rock of Love.

Sarah Palin Impaled at Art Show

Exitstrategy
Last night, one of the most talked-about pieces in "Svedka Vodka Presents..." was Exit Strategy by Ben Tegal/21st Century Filth. While obscenity laws required us to cover Ms Palin's nether regions with a small red "I Voted!" sticker, patrons could not resist giving Sarah a little poke down there. Maybe some thought the sticker was scratch 'n' sniff. The sticker started to flap off. The flaps got bigger. Long story short, Palin got fingerbanged. She got all tore up down there. Her front-hole was left in tatters. The artists have been informed, and are stopping by the gallery soon to perform a little vaginal rejuvenation. The piece is still available for purchase at $500.

Hollywood DC Opening-Night Press Mentions

Spencerandheidiinthebooth
Notes Gossip Girls on last night's cocktail opening of the Svedka vodka sponsored "Hollywood DC: Lights! Camera! Election!" group show at the World of Wonder Storefront Gallery:

They’re well-known for their political activity, especially since they’re some of the only Hollywood personalities voting Republican. And last night Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt were spotted partying at DC: Lights! Camera! Election! The peroxide pair looked to be having a marvelous time at the SVEDKA Vodka-sponsored event, held at the World of Wonder Storefront Gallery in Hollywood, with Heidi sporting a sleeveless black fringed-out dress with gladiator heels, while Spencer opted for a grey three-piece suit.

Meanwhile, E! Online's Marc Malkin made contact with the hosts of the event and fired off some questions:

Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt may prance around singing the praises of John McCain and Sarah Palin, but that doesn't mean the Hills stars are completely in line with the Republican ticket. Unlike McPalin, Speidi supports gay marriage. "I think it's your own choice," Montag said last night at the opening of Svedka presents Hollywood, DC: Lights! Camera! Election!, an art show at the World of Wonder Storefront Gallery in Hollywood. "I think, you know, whoever you decide to marry—boys, girls, whatever you like—it's up to you." Pratt credits his girlfriend's glam squad with his open-mindedness. "Heidi's hair and makeup people are my favorite people in the world and they happen to be gay," he said. "So if they wanna go marry each other, good for them." (More)
