A Real Queen

In launching her own YouTube channel, Jordan's smokin' hot Queen Rania invoked the name of World of Wonder. The channel is meant to encourage young people to help her tackle Muslim and Arab stereotypes. "In a world where it's so easy to connect to one another, we still remain very much disconnected. There's a whole world of wonder out there that we cannot appreciate with stereotypes," she said. (Source)

Salon's "I Like to Watch" columnist Heather Havrilesky says of the Sleeping Dogs Channel on WOW TV:

"an online video site by the geniuses at World of Wonder productions. The site shows nothing but dogs sleeping, which makes it a little less interesting than, say, Dancing With the Stars and a little more interesting than CSI: Miami. What is it about watching dogs sleep that's so relaxing? Whether it's the heavy-lidded blinking of Chloe or the worried brow and paw licking of Stella, the Sleeping Dog Channel offers so many hours of commercial-free enjoyment that it's sure to make its creators rich, I tell you, rich as kings!"

Get Out the Vote

Frenchbulldogpuppies
Just as with airlines and local news shows, there are many choices for your queer-blog browsing, but the one we mop from the most is !!omg blog!! because it runs the gamut from kittens to cocks, puppies to penises. Which is a gamut we feel most comfortable running in. The site has made it to the Final Three in the Gay Bloggies and in this time of election frenzy and celebrity stumping we feel compelled to throw our support behind one of the candidates for the $2,500 prize. So we urge you to vote for OMG's Frank because, even though his sexy karaoke entry might not get him past Idol auditions, he's a sweet kid and his blog is always highly browseable – and he's a friend of WOW. It'd be nice if you clicked here and voted Thumbs Up for Frank, then voted Thumbs Down for the other two, like we did. Thanks for your time.

Press

Excerpt from Lina Lecaro's 9/19/07 "Nightranger" column in the LA Weekly:

FowleymonroecelebritismBefore we start thinking about next year, though, there are the holidays to contend with. Our calendar is definitely marked for World of Wonder’s “Hollyween” exhibits curated by actor Daniel Franzese (the gay guy in Mean Girls) in October, and “Tit-mas” shows (curated by Lenora Claire of Golden Gals Gone Wild fame) in December. If last Friday night’s “Celebritism” opening, featuring works from fearless photog Austin Young, was any indication, these fetes are gonna be anything but “another night in Hollywood.” Tweaking icon worship with his vintage framed shots of Marilyn Monroe–esque creatures and nude poster-size images of local luminaries like Mario Diaz and female-to-male (partial) tranny Buck Angel — not to mention an interactive window display with assorted freaks in blond wigs and white Marilyn dresses — this show brought out a host of fabulous guests including America’s Next Top Model makeup artist Sutan, Angus Oblong (creator of The Oblongs cartoon), operatic drag queen Squeaky Blonde and self-proclaimed “21st-Century Renaissance Man” Kim Fowley. He not only gave us the scoop on the upcoming Runaways movie, Neon Angels — to be directed by video princess Floria Sigismondi — but gave us a glimpse of his androgynous character/alter ego the “Satan of Silver Lake” from his “mascara and madness epic” Dollboy. He even took off his pants at one point to reveal a dress underneath! Yikes. As for the Joan Jett/Cherie Curie–backed biopic, we wondered how the not-exactly-beloved Fowley might be portrayed. His answer? “An American Malcolm McLaren version of General George S. Patton.” Not that he cares. As writer and producer of many of the girl band’s tunes, he stands to make bank on the soundtrack.

From the crowd to the art to the mortified Walk of Fame tourists who peeked into the party throughout the night, the Warholian gathering was as warped and wonderful as WOW’s TV productions. But the best (or worst?) is yet to come even before their holiday happenings, when the gallery presents “Just Britney” next Friday, September 28. The night of Spears-inspired art will include a sculpture of her likeness made out of bubblegum and artist Jamie Boling’s much-buzzed-about “Snake Charmer,” a 6-foot-by-10-foot painting of the poptart’s pantyless car-exit crotch shot (which apparently had to be covered when Barack Obama visited the Virginia gallery where it used to hang). Ya gotta see this one, y’all.

Laurawoodman"It's the funny little non sequiturs that are this show's best minor accomplishment," says the Boston Globe's Matthew Gilbert in reviewing the second-season premiere of The Minor Accomplishments of Jackie Woodman. Citing similarities to Sarah Silverman, Kathy Griffin, and Sandra Bernhard, he says the IFC show "should inspire a small grin from those of us with a taste for Hollywood's twisted ladies of irony... women who relish revealing La-La Land in all its naked absurdity." That would be the series' stars, the absurdly droll comic team of Laura Kightlinger and Nicholle Tom, whom he likens to both Lucy and Ethel and the girls of Absolutely Fabulous. (Full review)

WOW Announces the Opening of Its Storefront Art Gallery

Sham001Lenora002Sweater003
Los Angeles, Aug 2 2007 – World of Wonder Productions founders Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato announced today the opening of ART IN AUGUST, a monthlong art exhibit co-curated by Steven Corfe and Thairin Smothers, inaugurating WOW's storefront gallery in the historic Shane Building on Hollywood Boulevard. Each week in August, World of Wonder will go full frontal on the Walk of Fame, exposing a hot new batch of artists.

Showcasing a different artist each week, ART IN AUGUST begins this Friday, August 3, with the celebrity portraits of Sham Ibrahim. On Saturday, August 11, Lenora Claire will show her collection of erotic paintings of TV’s Golden Girls in a show she calls Golden Gals Gone Wild. Homoerotically altered auction catalogues and scrapbooking by the SweaterQueens follow on Friday, August 17. Going out with a bang on Friday, August 24, the gallery will premiere the work of a very special and very controversial surprise guest artist, to be announced shortly.

Gallery shows continue for a week with daytime hours, during which the works are available for purchase.

It's good when people are on the same page. Literally. On page 67 of the LA Weekly, we found two WOW-related ads coincidentally side-by-side: the ad for WOW podcast star James St James' new book Freak Show – all pink, perky, and praised – sits next to the ad for Allison Margolin's law practice – and Margolin also happens to be the subject of a new WOW series, Allison Margolin: The Dopest Attorney in Town. But we have no association with that cellular healing and sacred transmission dude.

Variety today announced three personality-based reality productions in the works at World of Wonder. That's us. "We've become big enough as a production company with the resources to be aggressive in finding real-life characters," said Randy Barbato, one of our two bosses here at WOW, the other being Fenton Bailey, who concurs. Allison Margolin: The Dopest Attorney in Town, will deal with a Los Angeles lawyer who specializes in medical-marijuana cases while working for her family's practice. Beauty School Dropout follows actor Jim J Bullock as he makes his way from beauty school to owner of a hair salon. And the eponymous star of Jeffree Star, the third show in production, is the internet's cross-dressing, pink-haired, singing and songwriting sensation, whom Bailey describes as a "digital polymath" and Cyndi Lauper will have as the opening act on her summer tour. And Baby Makes Threesome

Variety reports today that the Independent Film Channel, known on the street as IFC, is "stretching its series legs" and developing some shows that aren't necessarily film-centric. One of them, though, is not only film-centric, but eccentric as well. It's Pornopolis, about a typical suburban family in which the parents happen to run a porn business. Hey, it happens. The soap-style series is being produced by World of Wonder and written by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, with Hysterical Blindness' Laura Cahill attached to the project. "We were intrigued by the fact that...people who make porn also have families and live in the suburbs," says Debbie DeMontreux, IFC's original programming VP. The WOW boys, who've long been huge fans of Laura Cahill's "classic" Hysterical Blindness script, are thrilled "to no end" to have her on board, says Barbato. "Pornopolis is a series we've tried to get off the ground for over eight years," he says "We even met with Kathie Lee Gifford many many years ago and discussed her playing the part of a former porn-star mother of three." Whoa.

Good news! The WOW feature documentary, Children of God: Lost and Found, has been accepted for competition at the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, in January, screening on the 21st and 23rd. Directed by first-timer Noah Thomson, it's his first-person account of growing up in the evangelical cult and his search for others who made it out alive. It was edited by Mike Rysavy who, as talent and hard work would have it, has another WOW movie he edited screening at that other Park City festival, Sundance. Miss Navajo was written and directed by Billy Luther, who got the idea to shed some light on the annual Miss Navajo Nation Pageant from his mother, who won the crown in 1966. Gay Dwarfs and Handkerchiefs

relax2.jpgTune in tonight to reminisce with the poptastic videos that stole Britain's virginity again and again throughout the '80s. World of Wonder's Jacques Peretti journeys into the excess money, politics, and gender-bending sexapades that shaped a nation towards sacrificing its daughters to gay guys in lycra looking for fame. In an era when icons George Michael and Princess Diana shared the same haircut, and people swore themselves to celibacy or fucking themselves to death, exotic eroticism managed to disguise itself as MTV respectable remarkably well. A retrospective of brave bizarre hip thrusts.

I'm currently music supervising a wonderful, irreverent, and hilarious new film called Another Gay Movie, by acclaimed director Todd Stephens (Edge of Seventeen, Gypsy 83). It's a colorful teen sexploitation spoof in the vein of contemporary classics American Pie and Clueless. 2674113-Tm-TmWe deserve a nice meaty treat. Or, better yet, a bite on our vagina. Reality Blurred has posted its five top reality shows of 2005, and WOW's Showdog Moms & Dads came in at number 3, just above number-4 Being Bobby Brown.

Bravo’s Showdog Moms and Dads. In the middle of the season, a random woman’s dog attacked a random guy in a park. From the driver’s seat of her van, that woman explained in broken English that even she was scared by her vicious dog. She said, “He bite me in my vagina. When I’m walking and he sees other dog, he right away, he jump on my vagina, because he get so crazy!” With peripheral cast members like her, plus an extremely strong, fanatically obsessed group of dog owners, is it any wonder that people watched attentively? The show was easily the best of the Moms and Dads series, and one of the best series of the year.

An rousing panel of documentary directors is convening tonight at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to discuss the use and ethics of reenactments in documentary films. There'll be ample clips illustrating the varied ways reenactments have been used in history. Thomas Edison, for example, recreated the death of President McKinley's assassin for his Execution of Czolgosz, Robert Flaherty used indoor igloos on sets for Nanook of the North, and Errol Morris famously reenacted most of the incriminating scenes in The Thin Blue Line. The panel, moderated by The Decline of Western Civilization's Penelope Spheeris, includes Grizzly Man's Werner Herzog, Dogtown and Z-Boys' Stacy Peralta, and our own Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato.

The other two were Project Greenlight and Blow Out. Eek! Blow Out? So now we're wondering if we deserve to be congratulated. But according to Bravo, who had all three shows on its network, they were “the top three reality series of the 2004-2005 broadcast season that had the highest measurement for program attentiveness (in which viewers are more likely to recall specific program details than any of the 250 primetime reality shows scheduled on broadcast and cable primetime among all measured viewers).”
