Lindsay and Sam: Girl, Interruptus

Lindsandsam
According to a report on Queerty, Lindsay and Sam, America's new canyon-yodeling sweethearts, dropped into New York's fisty gay bar The Cock around 3AM this morning, danced with the boys, and left at the 4AM closing. We tell you this only because it seems during that hectic hour the girls were heard discussing the Party Monster soundtrack. And, well, you know, we have a soft spot here at WOW for mention of that movie.

Romanian Discovery

Romanianpartymonster
It seems no matter where I go, WOW is somewhere close by. I am in Romania shooting a movie. I walk onto one of the sets and am standing around doing the normal things I do on the set (which really is just standing around). I look over on the counter in the kitchen set and I see a DVD. Being the curious lookie-loo that I am, I pick it up. Imagine my surprise when I discover it is a disc of Party Monster. It makes me laugh. Come to find out it is a favorite of one of the actresses working on the movie.

Dylan McDermott: Learning on the Job

Shivarosedylan
Party Monster star Dylan McDermott has filed for divorce from his wife of 13 years, Shiva Rose, citing the old standby, irreconcilable differences, and is seeking joint custody of their two girls, ages 12 and two. Interesting note in the case is that McDermott, who argued cases for eight years on the hit drama The Practice, apparently learned a few things from the scripts and will be his own lawyer in his divorce. Let's hope he doesn't next lose an eye and open a nightclub. (ICYDK; photo: WENN)

A Program Note

PmonsterbannerFreakshowcoverart0022-2
James St. James would have you know that he will be at the Nuart Theatre in Los Angeles tonight before and after the midnight screening of Party Monster, which is beginning to show signs of having a kind of Rocky Horror aura. Of course, James will be there to say hello and sign copies of his new book, Freak Show. He's already seen Party Monster. A few times.

Creature vs Monster

LagooncreaturePmonster061807
I saw a midnight showing of The Creature from the Black Lagoon (in 3D!) at the Nuart on Saturday. Great movie and the show was a kick, the most fun I've had at a movie theater in a long time. Anyway, I learned the Nuart is going to be screening Party Monster on July 13. JSJ is going to be there for a signing, too. Pretty cool to hear people in the audience cheer a WOW trailer. My girlfriend nudged me and said, "You work for a cool company."

The Party Monster Affect

Motherfuckerstill
According to the San Francisco Bay Guardian, "This year's Frameline is bursting with documentaries about legendary nightlife personalities. Call it the Party Monster effect." This so-called effect, while very flattering to us progenitors, is really something like a fallout. Seems since the WOW films Party Monster: The Shockumentary and Party Monster: The Movie, which traced in fact and fiction the quick rise and murderous fall of club-kid provocateur Michael Alig, filmmakers have become more savvy to the significance of nightclub activity in gay and other lifestyles, and noticed how including the flamboyant club-kid factor was a shortcut to notoriety for their films.

Of the four films included in the Frameline festival that are cloaked in the Party Monster effect – Alexis Arquette: She's My Brother (Matthew Barbato and Nikki Parrott), The Godfather of Disco (Gene Graham), Motherfucker: A Movie (David Casey), and Starrbooty (Mike Ruiz) – we are partial to, of course, Starrbooty, you bet, but also Motherfucker, about which SFBG says:

[DJ and cofounder of the clubs Jackie 60 and Mother] Johnny Dynell also pays tribute to one of NYC's hottest clubs of the past decade in Motherfucker: A Movie, which follows six months in the lives of Motherfucker's four touchingly self-important promoters. Director David Casey works hard to import something other than sublebrity worship into his pic, giving us some beautiful camerawork, lessons about the inner workings of club promotion and operation, and a wealth of cameos by partiers both weathered and nubile, from Sylvain Sylvain and Bob Gruen to Willie Ninja and Moby to the Juan Maclean and Peppermint Gummybear.

Motherfucker: A Movie screens Tuesday, June 19 at the Victoria (watch the trailer here); Starrbooty screens Saturday, June 23, at the Castro (watch trailer here)

Factory Recall

EdiennaMacaligPoor Factory Girl. If only the director and the disparate editing crews could have properly finished it before its too-early release due to somebody's foolhardy idea that Sienna Miller might get an Oscar nomination. The reviews haven't been kind, and now in this one on 411mania.com, Party Monster has been dragged into the muck. Which we don't mind, actually. A mention is a mention.

If George Hickenlooper’s direction was not so inept and clumsy, Factory Girl might have received better reviews. His camera work feels nervous with black & white sequences mixed with quick editing, superfluous angles, and occasional grainy footage inserted as if supposed to be actual interviews. The party and club atmosphere, as well as the homosexual tendencies of certain characters, is reminiscent of Party Monster with Macaulay Culkin. Both pictures are strangely satisfying.

James and Michael's Lesbian Reunion

Clip-Service-Logo-1

As we mentioned last week, the porn "version" of Party Monster, written and directed by and starring Joanna Angel, is in stores this week. This trailer, forwarded to us by our friend Lenora Claire (who it turns out used to date the codirector), shows the similarity between the WOW film and this wow! film to be tenuous at best, although we think we spotted the Keoki character. NSFW unless you work in a strip club.

Porny Monster

Pornymonsterdvd-1
We're just sorry we didn't think of this first. Or did we? Randy? Fenton? Anyway, Porny Monster, the porn version of the WOW cult feature Party Monster, starring the "Punk Rock Princess of Porn" Joannna Angel, will be released on January 9. Of course, we haven't seen it yet, but we figure this "version" will be a loose one. We're curious about the story and who's playing whom because, really, who could "do" James St James better than Seth Green? As luck would have it, on Gram Ponante.com, Ms Angel was asked, "Does Porny Monster have anything to do with Party Monster or is it just the best title ever?" And she said, "It is a spoof of Party Monster. I pretty much copied it. I'm James St. James and Chapel Waste is Michael Alig." She calls the film her "masterpiece." At first, we thought Joanna Angel would be perfect for the part of, you know, Angel. But then we realized it was really such a small part and most of it would end up on the cutting-room floor. (Thanks to Annie Sprinkle, who gave us a heads-up, so to speak, on this project.)

Nlyonneturnsselfin
Party Monster actress Natasha Lyonne's former roommate said in court papers (the bitch) that last December Lyonne trashed their apartment and then banged on a neighbor's door, rushed in, picked up a dog and told the tenant, "I'm going to sexually molest your dog." We don't believe a word of it. Actually, we don't believe two words of it: "sexually molest." We believe Lyonne had to have said, "fuck your dog." Since that alleged incident, a bench warrant has been out for her arrest on a number of charges, including criminal mischief. Today she turned herself in – life's not easy on the lam – and threw herself on the mercy of the court. The judge said he'd drop the charges if she'd be a good girl for six months. (Source)

Remember Clara the Chicken? For those of you who don't, click here or cluck there. Meanwhile, I'm sorry to report that Clara's career has taken a turn for the worse: Disguising herself as Fred, she's guest-starring in Clown Porn (watch the trailer). Judging by the cover art, it looks like she's getting a good plucking. When I tracked her down, she clucked in protest before reluctantly making a clean breast of it. She maintains that she is pioneering a new genre of adult entertainment: Pornomedy. Eggsactly!

There is a 23-year-old hot raver in prison (for robbery) with Alig who has the hots for Richie Rich. This convicted raver robber has never met Richie Rich, he's just seen him in an issue of Paper magazine. I know its mundane, but I found it interesting that hot ravers in prison are reading Paper. Interesting note: Gay people are called "chumps" at Michael's prison.

Visiting Ours

MalignymagNew York magazine picks up the slack on information about Michael Alig, 10-year prison resident for the murder of club kid Angel Melendez. To keep Alig alive, so to speak, while Melendez remains dead, the magazine catches up with the real-life party monster at Elmira Correctional Facility in New York, and it's not pretty.

He is 40 years old, for one thing, and he skulks into the room looking as though he hasn’t showered or shaved in days. His longish brown hair is dull and dirty. He is hunched over, paunchy, tentative. The $500 Prada glasses that his friends, two former club kids named Jenny and Karliin, bought for him last year are precariously perched on his nose, held together with fishing line, one lens missing. He has on a maroon T-shirt splattered with paint and standard-issue green drawstring pants. We are sitting in a tiny jerry-rigged enclosure of plywood and Plexiglas deep in the bowels of the maximum-security prison. The institutional quiet of the place is shattered at regular intervals with bursts of harsh, frightening noise: buzzers going off, iron doors slamming shut, guards shouting orders.

And if you read the piece (it's long) and make it to the "Phone Call from a Felon" section, here's the link to the popular James St. James series that ran on the WOW Report. (t/y Kate)

And speaking of that Party Monster party in North Kansas City, Missouri, be there before it multiplies. Here's what you need to know if you're in the area on Saturday. Last night was the 4th Annual Club Party Monster at the Music Box Theater in Hollywood, a night that gets bigger and crazier each year and is now taking off in other cities, like North Kansas City. (It's becoming Halloween's Rocky Horror.) Party Monster, both the movie and the shockumentary, played on a giant screen, mashed together with club-kid clips and Amanda Lepore jiggling her bitties thanks to VJ Thairin Smothers. Chris McKim, meanwhile, photographed the assembled cyber-punks, gogo dancers, and hot club messes. Spotted in the crowd were CSI's Eric Szmanda, Alexis Arquette, Ring My Bell guests Geoffrey Paris and Kelly Likes Shoes, fab portrait button designer Plasticgod, and a handful of James St. Jamesalikes. The real James meanwhile was unnerving in a splendid rictus grin mask.

Party Monster vet Wilmer Valderrama (who we hear was once in a Fox sitcom) is producing and may possibly be starring in a Universal film called PartyBuddys, based on the Hollywood nightlife service called PartyBuddys that takes anybodys and nobodys with money around the nightclubs, giving them a faux entourage, allowing them to feel like VIPs, and ensuring their safe passage past the velvet ropes. PartyBuddys, alas, is not a Party Monster sequel. That would be called BloodyBuddys.

Dear Jackie Beat,
Have you ever party’d with Michael Alig, James St. James or Amanda Lapore?

I know James and Amanda and I’m sure at some point I met Michael Alig, but PLEASE do not forget that Michael Alig is a MURDERER. The young man he killed was not just a drug dealing “freak”, he was someone’s son and brother — someone’s best friend.
Fuck this glamorization of brutality.

Party Girl Makes Good: She Was Lisa E

Iwaslisae

Our longtime pal, Lisa Edelstein, who plays Lisa Cuddy on House, just got a spread in the latest TV Guide, a Q&A conducted by veteran TVG scribe Ileane Rudolph. It's lively and concise but, even though she's asked if she would like to be artificially inseminated, the interview is not exactly edgy. But a report on the PR Inside website, severely condensed from the TV Guide interview, makes her sound like a former hooker, starting with the shocker headline HOUSE STAR EDELSTEIN: "I WAS LISA E." It's hilarious.

HOUSE star LISA EDELSTEIN has a dark past - she was the New York party regular dubbed the Queen Of The Night by famed gay socialite JAMES ST JAMES. The actress, who now plays straight-laced hospital boss DR LISA CUDDY on the hit medical drama starring Brit HUGH LAURIE, was once a wild child face on the Manhattan party scene. She says, "What excited me about the club scene was that the people were as different on the outside as I felt on the inside.

"I just needed to be around people who were expressing themselves." Edelstein confirms she was Lisa E in the new issue of America's TV Guide, but she insists she was just a teenager out for a good time and she never got caught up in the seedy drug world St James wrote about in his book PARTY MONSTER. She adds, "I'm not saying there weren't drugs, but the violence that my friend James St James wrote about in Party Monster came later. I did learn a huge lesson about celebrity, because I had just enough to experience being adored - and then hated."

So we called Lisa and asked for her take on this interpretation of her past. "Wow," she said. "Not only does it seem I was a dirty dirty whore, but that I was dubbed a whore by 'famed gay socialite' (aka macdaddy pimp) James St. James! Hey! That queen turned me out!" Then she made us give her $5.

Diana Dearest

Dscarwidred

Everyone knows from the poster and trailer for the new Omen movie that June 6 will be the dreaded 06/06/06. So it's an ideal release date for the new Hollywood Royalty Edition of the Mommie Dearest DVD, with feature commentary by John Waters and three documentaries (The Revival of Joan, Life with Joan, Joan Lives On), and interviews with Waters, Lypsinka, Diana Scarwid, and other notables. Scarwid, who played Crawford's daughter Christina, has, of course, become a gay icon almost equal to Faye Dunaway, thanks to Mommie but, unlike Dunaway, has no problem being approached by worshipers of the film. “I was in Wal-Mart a few months back looking at dental floss," she told Lawrence Ferber in the Philadelphia Gay News, "and I sensed someone down the aisle looking at me. I turned and this woman was staring and walking slowly toward me with this emotion on her face. She put out her hand and said, ‘You were that girl from Mommie Dearest.’ I said ‘Yes, ma’am,’ and we hugged each other, we were both crying, and that’s all that was said.” As Ferber points out, she went from being the daughter of a monster to the mother of a monster when she played Michael Alig's mother Elke in WOW's cult-approaching-classic biopic Party Monster.

The Ponch Line

Wilmerchips
Recently, That 70s Show and Party Monster star Wilmer Valderrama explained to the Los Angeles Daily News (the other white read) his take on the re-imagining of the TV show CHiPS as a theatrical feature, in which he'll play the Eric Estrada role of Poncherello.

What we're doing is, we're having fun with it, but we're not making fun of CHiPs. A lot of the remakes that have happened in the last couple of years have failed because they make fun of their franchise. You can't be making fun of something that at some point people cared so much about. For the world, CHiPs is a very serious drama. You can't disrespect that. What we want is for the comedy to be very organic and just be character driven – not to have funny costumes or funny gags.

In other words, it will make The Dukes of Hazzard seem stupid.

Alum-inati: Seth Green

Backstagesethgreen
Our boy Seth Green is the cover story in the April 2-12 issue of Back Stage West. After disappointing ratings and the ultimate "hiatus" status of his Four Kings sitcom, the Party Monster star has a hit with Cartoon Network's hilarious Robot Chicken, which he cocreated, produces, directs, and voices.

[Green] locates a doll designed to look like Wentworth Miller from Prison Break, but instead of the prison's blueprints tattooed on the doll's chest, it's a map to the stars' homes that will help the doll find John Larroquette's residence. Why Larroquette? [...] "Because everybody loves John Larroquette."

All signs point to a winner with Robot Chicken. We wish him better luck with the chicken than he had with the bunny.

Macaulay01 N"It's kind of been me and my mind," says Macaulay Culkin about the "isolated existence" he's led since the age of six. "I'm the most out-of-work actor I know." His last major role was in the WOW cult feature Party Monster. Now he's afraid people are going to think he's gone nuts when they read his semiautobiographical novel, Junior, which he wrote in the long periods between acting. "I hope people don't think I'm crazy, because I'm not," he says, urging fans not to read, so to speak, too much into the book. Of course, we'd go a little mental too if we knew we'd still have "Home Alone star" affixed to our name when we're 70. Not that "Junior author" would sound much better.

Let's see, it looks to be a McDonalds in Manhattan, two stories, very mall-like. Nelson Sullivan was the camera operator, as usual then. People are having fun. It's an outlaw party, obviously planned by Alig back when both he and New York at night were fun and unexpected. Before it got all Mickey McMoused, supersized. When was that? When was this party? Alum-inati: Party Monster Edition

Well, we know that Party Monster vet Wilmer Valderrama is in the news this month as the guy whose love for Lindsay Lohan was outweighed and eventually smothered by her neuroses. But what of the others?

0,1020,469411,00Cinematical reports that Macaulay Culkin's career has taken a turn for the lesser, and his once-promising comeback, which started with Party Monster and Saved!, has ended up in the loo aka the British Big Brother house, albeit a celebrity edition. And it's said the reality show wanted him only for what insider dish he might leak about life with Michael Jackson.

Inside-SethgreenSeth Green, on the other hand, seems to be doing just fine, with People thinking he might just be the hardest working man in show biz. He's got Four Kings premiering Thursday on NBC's revival of Must-See TV. He's the voice of Chris Griffin on Fox's Family Guy. And there's a little something called Robot Chicken on the Cartoon Network. Despite all that, plus, of course, the Austin Powers franchise, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Greg the Bunny, the role he's most proud of is the James St. James character in Party Monster.

Killer's Kiss

Slavish fans of James St. James, Michael Alig, and Party Monster can't get enuff. Not satisfied with two! versions of Party Monster, sometimes they have to make up stuff so they can continue living. Here, for example, is Kacey's blog page that appears to be a kind of Scene We'd Have Liked to See in the Culkin-Green film, which apparently needed additional, more romantic scenes between the two stars. Really nice illustrations.

"Why does everyone want to leave me, James? Just stay." The words were less hysterical and more quiet, more subdued. Michael's warm breath touched James' glitter covered lips and Michael was watching them shine with sleepy fascination. For a moment, James actually thought that Michael was going to fall asleep right there on top of him.

He was wrong. Without another warning, Michael closed that last inch of space between their mouths and kissed James firmly, greedily, fingers tightening on his friend's wrists. James immediately growled in protest, wiggling to escape. But Michael pushed his hips down hard against the other boy's crotch and James gasped, opening his mouth to Michael's kiss, purple paint and silver glitter mixing on the delicate flesh of their lips.

The Party Pack

We tried to warn them. Because these are exactly the sorts of things that occur when you get mixed up with Michael Alig and that whole Party Monster cult. Macaulay Culkin travels cross-country carrying a stash. Chloe Sevigny gives an onscreen blowjob to Vincent Gallo in real time. Seth Green sports a Mohawk in public as 2005 approaches. And now Natasha Lyonne – sweet sweet Natasha, who played the multi-pierced horror Brooke in the Party Monster movie – was arrested last Friday when she stormed screaming into a neighbor's apartment, grabbed and threatened the dog, and tore a mirror off the wall. All for no apparent reason, though we're sure she had one. Zap2it via bignewsnetwork reminds us that four years ago the actress was arrested for DUI in Miami Beach and performed 50 hours of community service. But then, who among us hasn't been arrested for DUI at one time or another? (Although we always forget to say, "I'm a movie star. Can I talk to my entertainment lawyer?") Meanwhile, Lyonne's real punishment will come when she appears in Rob Zombie's upcoming film, The Devil's Rejects.

Sarah Gianetto, who writes a nightlife column on azcentral.com, reports of a party scheduled for the night before All Hallow's Eve at Sadisco at Phoenix club Jugheads. It's a "blood feast" party a la Party Monster, she says, at which attendees are encouraged to dress like the characters and "get bloodied under an Industrial, EBM and Noise mallet, or knife yourself to some random aural assault." Whatever the hell that means. The party listing promises DJs Squalor as Michael Alig, ? as James 'Saint' James, ///she/// as Angel, Aversion as Richie Rich, and Nixx as Christina.

Meanwhile, here in Los Angeles, Avalon is having a Club Party Monster Pre-Halloween Bash on October 27th, that features WOW's Thairin Smothers, formerly of Cherry, on visuals and Michael Alig's ex, Keoki , on turntables. The flyer promises not only James St. James in the flesh, but threatens to bring "all the original club kids from the NY & LA club scene." It doesn't say bringing them what, but if they're the original kids, the club better have wheelchair access.

Frankly, I don't understand this worship of James. What's the big deal? He's the friend who drives me to and from work since my license has been suspended (jealous?) and he puts on his pantyhose one leg at a time like the next guy.

Party Friendster

05MONS.2.184Here's an odd statistic. Party Monster, the movie that marked Macaulay Culkin's return to film after a long absence, is a Friendster favorite. "Party Monster is listing as the favorite film by loads of kids on Friendster," notes Brad Simpson, one of the film's producers who now runs Leo DiCaprio's production company. "I have counted 240 so far. I spent Friday evening with Ricky Vodka and he was nonstopping quoting lines from it."

The Courtship of Eddie Seda

kissofscorpion040412_175Michael Alig, never one to miss an opportunity for more press exposure, as if a documentary, a feature movie, and countless print stories are not enough, roped New York magazine writer Esther Haynes into helping him with his autobiography (what more is there?) and, while he had her in Attica, turned her on to the hot romance of Zodiac Killer Eddie Seda and his tranny girlfriend Synthia China-Blast in a cell block down the hall. Captivating.

The Attica visiting room has the feel of a high-school cafeteria, except the lunch monitors carry pepper spray and handcuffs. Vending machines line one wall, Disney characters and ocean murals decorate the others, and couples sit at the numbered square tables, trying to steal kisses or a touch. The prisoners in protective custody must sit in the front row, closest to the officers. When Eddie Seda walks over to my assigned spot, I’m surprised at how handsome he is, with short black hair, innocent-looking eyes, and a shy smile that never leaves his face. He was voted “most fuckable perp” by a group of female journalists who covered his arrest in 1996. Sentenced to life in prison and not eligible for parole until he turns 264, he tells me he’s slowly getting used to the fact that he’s never going to see freedom again.
"Everybody said he was the copycat Zodiac Killer, so I had this preconceived notion of what he would be like," says Alig of Seda. "He had this blank stare, which was kind of frightening. But then I got to know him, and he’s just like any other serial killer. Salt of the earth.”

Prison Monster

New Website raydar.com.au lauches from Australia with some exclusive prison correspondence from Michael Alig, Drano killer. The interview, conducted through the mail by Danny Corvini, is not new--the Party Monster movie hadn't even been shot yet--but it's exhaustive, covering the gamut of usual Alig topics: club kids, New York parties, family, boyfriends, drugs, and sex in prison.

As unbelievable as this may sound, being openly gay in prison can actually be a positive thing - there's no stigma attached to being gay whatsoever. In fact, openly gay men are a commodity in here. The straightest, most macho types all want to "befriend" the openly gay inmates - of which there are very few - in order to reaffirm their own masculinity . In other words, the butch types all want an openly gay type as a sex partner. It seems they (the butch types) don't want to meet another one of their own. They don't crave company with other macho men. They crave the company of feminine, sensitive types. It's almost.. no, it actually is .. romantic.
