Oscar Pistorius, the 21-year-old South African sprinter whose lower legs were amputated when he was a child, has finally had his ban lifted and is cleared to run at the Beijing Olympics. It was thought that his carbon-fiber Cheetah prostheses gave him an unfair advantage over fully limbed opponents, and the IAAF banned any athlete using "technical devices that incorporate springs or wheels." But he fought the ban all the way to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, in Lausanne, Switzerland, which overturned the ban yesterday. “I hope that it silences many of the crazy theories that have been circulating in recent months about my having an unfair advantage,” Pistorius said. “My focus throughout has been to ensure that disabled athletes be given the chance to compete fairly with able-bodied athletes.” (Times Online; photo at right: Alberto Pizoli/AFP/Getty)
