Robert Rauschenberg, one of the most innovative and celebrated artists of the 20th century, died early Tuesday of a heart attack at his home in Captiva Island, Florida. He was 82. A painter, photographer, printmaker, choreographer, performer, set designer, and composer, Mr. Rauschenberg refused to be known as an artist working in just one medium or style. In the 1950s, he pioneered "combines," constructions that used sculpture, painting, and found objects. He worked alongside another acclaimed pop artist, Jasper Johns, his lover for many years, and collaborated with musician John Cage and choreographer Merce Cunningham. In 1964, he was the first American artist to win the Grand Prize at the Venice Biennale, and in 1983 he won a Grammy for designing the cover of the Talking Heads album, Speaking in Tongues.
