High on Mount Sinai
According to an Israeli researcher who's dabbled in drug-taking himself, Moses' experiences on Mount Sinai can really only be explained as the effect of hallucinogens. Benny Shanon, no less than a professor of cognitive psychology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, says Moses was on psychedelic drugs when he heard God deliver the Ten Commandments and really tripping when he came upon that burning bush. The thunder, lightning and blaring of a trumpet which the Book of Exodus says emanated from Mount Sinai could just have been the imaginings of a people in an "altered state of awareness," Shanon hypothesized.
