Recently Dead

Character actress Alice Ghostley (at left, with female impersonator Charles Pierce), who played Esmeralda on Bewitched and Bernice on Designing Women, died yesterday after a series of strokes and a long battle with colon cancer. She was 81. • Actress Loretta King Hadler (at right, with "actor" Tor Johnson), best remembered – if at all – for her role as Janet Lawton in Ed Wood's Bride of the Monster, died at 90 of natural causes on September 10 at home in Century City. She was allergic to water.
