About Face

Something new in the news: an outing involving a Republican politician that's not scandalous. In a speech yesterday announcing to the City Council both a reversal of his position on gay marriage and (not coincidentally) the fact that his daughter Lisa is a lesbian, San Diego mayor Jerry Sanders, with his wife by his side, said, “I've decided to lead with my heart, which is probably obvious right now, to do what I think is right and to take a stand on behalf of equality and social justice.” He said he would sign a City Council resolution to send a brief to the state Supreme Court backing an end to the state's ban on same-sex marriage. Referring to his daughter and two staff members who are gay, he said, “I want for them the same thing that we all want for our loved ones, for each of them to find a mate whom they love deeply and loves them back, someone with whom they can grow old together and share life's experiences, and I want their relationships to be protected equally under the law.” (Source; photo: Sanders and wife Rana Sampson; t/y Wendy)
