Release the Hounds!
Next Tuesday at 8PM, noted British animal rights activist and performance artist Mark McGowan (at right) will eat a Welsh corgi – the breed favored by the queen – on Bob and Roberta Smith's radio show. The dog, which died at a breeding farm in southern England, will be cooked and eaten by McGowan in protest against the Royals' alleged inhumane treatment of animals. "I know some people will find this offensive and tasteless," said McGowan, "but I am doing this to raise awareness about the RSPCA's inability to prosecute Prince Phillip and his friends for shooting a fox earlier this year, letting it struggle for life for five minutes, and then beating it to death with a stick." The RSPCA, which found nothing wrong with the prince's fox-hunting behavior, said of McGowan's stunt, "If the dog's dead he's free to eat it." McGowan's previous public displays include eating a swan, pushing a peanut to Downing Street with his nose, sitting in a bathtub filled with baked beans with French fries up his nose and sausages on his head, and, somewhat ironically, eating a fox in a protest against crackheads.
