Knickers in a Twist

This morning I got this hilarious email from the BBC:

Dear Fenton

As a result of the BBC/RDF Queen misrepresentation, myself and a number of other Execs are having to contact all our suppliers over the past 3 years to review our output. To sum up, this is to see if they may have in any way misled the viewer with anything that has been broadcast by the BBC.

If you feel there is anything you wish to discuss, please feel free to call me. It will not in any way be held against you, but we've been asked to make these calls to everyone, just to be on the safe side.

Sorry for having to send this out, and please do not take it any way personally.

The fuss is all about a scene in which the queen huffs about being asked to remove her crown. Or something. One tiny piece of trivia is that the documentary was directed by Matt Reid, who got his first job in the biz working at World of Wonder. Anyway, BBC executives aren't normally in the habit of writing emails to lowly producers, so the queen must be very cross indeed.

Well, I would have thought that the whole point of the e-mail is because, due to misrepresentation, everyone - including you! - are going on about the Queen being in a huff when she wasn't. Sorry the BBC takes this stuff seriously. Obviously you think misrepresenting people is just a big hoo-ha pain in the neck. I'll bear it in mind if I see a World of Wonder show.

oh eric im sorry you missed the point; i take misrepresentation very seriously. its just that the bbc have forever been holier than thou about the quality of their output, only to committ the mother of all distortions. but we all have to be humble because all media is to some degree a distortion of reality because not a single cut ever gets made without someone's subjectivity informing the process...
