Kirking and Screaming
William Shatner has been kicking up such a fuss for so long about being left out of JJ Abrams' Star Trek movie while Leonard Nimoy has a role, that someone is finally answering. Roberto Orci, the film's co-writer with Transformers partner Alex Kurtzman, says the biggest problem with finding a spot for him is that his Captain Kirk character was killed in 1994's Star Trek VIII: Generations, and that Trekkies "are sticklers for their canon." (SciFi)
"So that is the struggle: the rigors of canon and not phoning it in just to have a cameo." Still, it could happen, he said. "From my point of view, it's a very long shoot, and things change. It's just whether we can figure it out." Another possible problem: The ongoing writers' strike prohibits members of the Writers Guild of America – which includes Orci, Kurtzman and Abrams – from making any changes to the script until the strike is settled.
