Off With Her Head
How quickly they turn. Oscar-winning director Sofia Coppola's anachronistic Marie Antoinette, concerning the 18th-century French queen, Versailles resident, and cake eater (Kirsten Dunst) married to Louis XVI (Jason Schwartzman) and set against a rock 'n' roll soundtrack, received loud boos and catcalls at Cannes and only a smattering of polite applause when it screened in competition. Hello? Quel surprise. French icons. American actors. France. "We always knew that the French are protective of their history," shrugged Coppola afterward, "and that's one of the challenges. But I wanted to show it in France first, because we made it here and it takes place here." Hopefully it won't die there, be forgotten there. (View the trailer)

Marie Antoinette: The Journey is an amazing book. There are so many misconceptions about MA. One thing is certain, she was German and the French hated her. They started a smear campaign against her early on and didn't stop until they had her head. All MA ever cared about was her husband and children. I just hope Sophia is true to the book.
