Sixth-Place Girl
In life we all have “extras.” You know, like when you go to a wedding and there's that couple dancing no one seems to recognize, or at the gym there are those dudes who just don’t stand out. It’s not to say that the people are ugly or anything, it’s just the opposite. Ugly people stand out, special people stand out, it’s the sixth-place girls who just fade into the background and become extras in our lives.
For those of you who watch reality television, the sixth-place girl is, obviously, the girl who gets sixth place on the show. If you have seen Top Model you know what I mean. Nicole from Cycle 3 was beautiful. In fact, she was much prettier than Eva who actually won the show, but she didn’t have that spark, that magic that makes you want to look in her direction. Almost every girl who gets voted out sixth on Survivor fits the bill. Christa, Kim Powers, Cindy, and Karen, to name a few. All good players, but I guarantee even the most observant Survivor buff (no pun intended) would have trouble telling you anything about these women. They don’t even have to be girls. Nick, Anwar from American Idol, and Beau from Big Brother also fall into the category. Oh, and they don’t always have to come in sixth; they can be seventh, sixth, or fifth. Alexandra from Project_Runway comes to mind.
So now you ask why in the hell I’ve gone into such elaborate detail to explain what a sixth-place girl is, so I will kill the suspense. I want to know how exactly in life you fall into the sixth-place trap and become one of the forgettable people. In the story of our own lives, we all think we are the stars, but have you ever been around those people who make you feel like a supporting character? Last week I had a wonderful get-together with friends and made tons of food and everyone had a good time, I think. But I know that some of the people at the party felt like they were supporting characters in the other guests’ lives. Some people tell stupid stories and jokes, some people act like fools, some people start fights, and we all do it to regain the control of the movie that is our lives. But these people usually don’t impress me much because they are fighting for the same spotlight I am. The people I look up to are the sixth-place girls who are just content to sit back and watch everyone else’s drama. I envy the sixth-place girl because, ironically, they are the easiest to recognize because they are not playing the game.
OK, back to reality (jesus I’m even confusing myself). On TV, the sixth-place girl does her best and beats about 10 people just by being herself, and they are usually content to get voted off. They know it’s their time. The remaining five people are all gunning for the final spot at the top and usually make asses of themselves to get there, and the people who go before the sixth-place girl usually have done something really stupid. Now, I am not a sixth-place girl by any means. Sometimes I suck and people hate me, and sometimes I’m really good and I am loved, but I am not a person who easily fades into the background. I push and pull, and laugh and scream, and do everything in my power to be remembered. But sometimes I think Wouldn’t it be nice to just chill out and enjoy the rest of the show? Something just takes over, and I know that when the lights come on it is time for me to shine. I love the light, don’t get me wrong, but I have to give mad props to the people who don’t. (Did I just say mad props? Who am I? Biggie Smalls?)
Now this is just an aside, but definitely worth mentioning. On Survivor: Australia, Amber was the ultimate sixtth-place girl, completely forgettable. When she was asked to come back and do Survivor All-Stars, she changed her game plan. She cheated and lied and slutted around and ended up beating all of the other players. So I guess that tells you that sometime sixth-place girls can win. BLOG HARD!
It’s always a business doing pleasure with you!

OMG!!!! DYLAN I just love you more and more every time you write something!!! Thats exactly how I am...but I never had a name for it! I HATE being the one that at which everyone stares...never ever wanted to be the center of attention, going so far as to refuse to have
b-day parties as a child. BUT I am the avid observer of soooooo many things and people. I find that role so very appealing and its so damn entertaining!!! Thanks for noticing that we arent freaks!

Not everyone wants to wave at Al on The Today Show. Not everyone wants to be on Blind Date. There's a segment of the population that *doesn't* crave fame. We've become such a celebrity obsessed society that it doesn't seem likely, but not everyone is a whore for the camera. (That's not to say I don't enjoy every item on this blog.) Many are participants, some are observers. I'm an observer. I don't need to win to be okay.
