Two thousand researchers, scientists, artists, historians, and assorted others convened in Basel, Switzerland, over last weekend to celebrate the 100th birthday of Albert Hofmann, the chemist who discovered LSD in 1938. Along with flowers and kisses from women, he got a letter of congratulations from the Swiss president. (Licking the stamp must have brought on a major flashback.) One of the celebrants, a Cisco Systems employer named Kevin Herbert, said he solves his toughest technical problems while dosed and tripping to drum solos by the Grateful Dead. Which, coincidentally, are the exact same conditions under which World of Wonder creates its television documentaries. "LSD wanted to tell me something," the still spry fried Hoffmann told those attending a conference called "LSD: Problem Child and Wonder Drug, an International Symposium on the Occasion of the 100th Birthday of Albert Hofmann." (Oh. Wow. That is so long.) "It gave me an inner joy, an open mindedness, a gratefulness, open eyes, and an internal sensitivity for the miracles of creation." Meanwhile, why is this computer on fire?
