Supernova: Black Hole?
The three guys who formed a band in Costa Mesa in 1989 called Supernova are suing CBS Broadcasting and Mark Burnett Productions to prevent them from using the name Supernova for any band that results from their reality show Rock Star: Supernova. Odd, since the unfortunate Gilby Clarke-Tommy Lee-Jason Newsted band (right) is already named Supernova; it's the lead singer that will result from the show.
An attorney for Burnett said the program's producers had obtained all the necessary legal rights to the name, and that the Orange County band had disbanded in the 1990s. "They were defunct before our show announcement," he said. "Their lawsuit is less credible than Ashlee Simpson's Saturday Night Live performance." Hey! Leave her out of it. The OC band conceded that it did take a break in 1999 so that one of the members could finish law school and other reasons, but that the band stayed intact and started performing again in May. Their song "Chewbacca" appeared on the soundtrack of the movie Clerks, in 1994.
We think, shut up, it's a dreadful name and no one should be saddled with it.
