Recently Dead
Gloria Monty, the woman who in 1978 took over the reins of the daytime drama General Hospital and not only saved it from certain cancellation, but turned it into the number-one-rated soap for 10 years, died of cancer last Thursday at her home in Rancho Mirage. She was 84. Perhaps you've heard of Luke and Laura, the rapist and his victim who became the hottest love story of the century? That was Monty's doing. "Some people call it a rape," she said. "We call it a seduction." Also on her not-too-shabby résumé, she directed Joan Crawford on The Secret Storm when the aging star subbed for daughter Christina on the soap in the late '60s.)
