The Gay Republican Redux

Maurice Bonamigo, one of the gay Republicans featured in the WOW documentary Gay Republicans, out now on DVD, is not finished with you:

An open message to gay and lesbian Americans from Maurice Bonamigo

Since the re-election of President George W. Bush and with Republicans controlling both houses of Congress, many of the liberal gay community are screaming that we are entering a new dark age for homosexuals. As a gay conservative, I assure you that nothing can be further from the true.

Frankly, things are improving rapidly for gay and lesbian people at a pace that has been unprecedented for any other in special interest group in American history-------but we can still do better.

There is much more that a conservative has to do to promote the positive image of productive conservatives and discrete gays in America. The conservative gay population needs to do a better job of promoting healthy relationships, one that underscores the message that responsibilities in long term gay and lesbian partnerships provide many benefits, psychological and spiritual, as well as physical and social.

We need to confront the increasing use of such recreational drugs as crystal meth, and the continued increase of unsafe sex among the man, i. e. bug chasing parties that encourage the spread of HIV among gay males.

Let’s face it—if a gay population wants to be accepted into mainstream America, they need to accept the way mainstream America really is. They must first stop exaggerating their problems. They must stop complaining about the freedoms they supposedly lack.

While President George W. Bush supports a constitutional amendment for gay marriage, he has and still recognizes the reality of same-sex unions, and furthermore, supports legislation that assists all hard-working Americans. For example, legislation that supports cost vs. accrual accounting for small businesses is just one of the ways that gay and lesbian own businesses prosper by paying taxes only on revenues received. Consider that approximately 1100 private employers, dozens of Fortune 500 companies, as well as institutions of higher learning have added domestic partner benefits. The conservative agenda offers a multitude of opportunities to those who wish to achieve at one to support a fiscally conservative mindset that mirrors their own.

Be wary of the ultraliberal gay population who continue the policies of personal destruction by deliberately and maliciously “ outing” closeted and discrete homosexuals within the Republican Party for their own perverse sense of humor and gain. It is not the role of the media, nor should be the role of activists, bloggers, or those such as John Aravasis and Mike Rogers to dig into the private sex lives of others. It is also not the job of the press to reach conclusions for readers, as much as advocates for all points in the spectrum would wish otherwise. It is the job of news pages to ask questions, print responses, report ascertainable facts, and let the reader decide. Sexual orientation itself is a private thing and no one should be pressured to come out of the closet before they are ready to do so.

Republicans are for government that stands on the side of marriage and also on the side of strong families. If one believes in government that respects your faith in your values, the Republican Party is also your party. Let me also venture to point out to the ultra-gay-left—the Republican Party is based on ideas and anyone who shares those ideas are welcomed. The Republican Party is not anti-gay nor anti-anything.

As I have often said, there is more prejudice, hatred, and hostilities from the left them there are from the right, particularly from the ultra-gay left who welcome gay conservatives with open arms of hatred; especially when it comes to the subject of marriage. How anticlimactic that the sacred ceremony celebrating the love of two people share would be used as a pawn to degrade the foundation of Liberty and family values our great country was formed upon!

Let me remind the liberal gay community that we do have the same rights and freedoms in the United States that are granted to every citizen of this great nation with the exception of marriage, which should remain between a man and a woman as it was intentionally meant to be from the beginning of time.

In fact, I firmly believe that the vast majority of Americans in this country do not have a problem with civil unions for the gay population which would entitle them to the same benefits and privileges as married couples. The issue at stake was that the relationship needs to be not only recognize in every state as to all marriage licenses for heterosexual couples.

Consider the following facts:

* In 2000 California voters passed proposition 22 which states “ only marriage between a man and woman is valid or recognize in California,” with 61 percent support.

* On February 12 2004. San Francisco began issuing marriage licenses in defiance of proposition 22. more than 4000 marriage licenses were granted to same-sex couples before the California Supreme Court ruled on August 12th 2004 that San Francisco did not have the authority to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

* In 2004, thirteen states passed marriage amendments and 21 more states are expected to vote on marriage amendments.

* On April 5th 2005, Kansas residents were scheduled to vote on the issue of a constitutional ban of gay marriage. The people of Kansas passed a law in favor of marriage between one-man and one-woman.

If the gay left had pursued civil unions as a positive affirmation of legitimate gay relations
As opposed to menacing words and engaging in mere semantics, they would have been further ahead and probably would have had what they wanted by now instead of demanding gay marriage before the American people. I suppose the next thing for liberal gays will be demanding is that we start granting a new popular lifestyle amongst the gay population known as “ three ways “ as another form of marriage. Four years, today community wanted the government and the American people out of their bedrooms. Ironically, these are the same people who now open the doors of their bedrooms for all to see.

It is time for the liberal gay population to stop whining, complaining, and playing the victims. It is time for the gay community to grow up, take responsibility for their actions, and start accepting the way mainstream America is and perhaps, mainstream America will start accepting the gay lifestyle not as a special interest group, but as just another form of the American lifestyle. After all, we are in ethnic and racial melting pot that rewards the hard work and efforts of those who want and strive to get ahead using their education, work ethic, and sense of moral right and wrong. Gays and lesbians are upstanding citizens and I am tired of my name being tarnished for the arrogant and ignorant behavior of the liberal minority whose sense of entitlement is sickening.

I hope we can move past the ignorance into an era of community for all gays and lesbians based not upon misguided ideologies, but with an idea toward making America better for our
Contributions. I intend to continue holding up my end.

First, Denial ain't a river in Africa.

Second, wasn't it the right that stepped in to repeal gay marraige laws.

Third, why should everyone live like Ozzie and Harriet? Why don't we just go all the way back and dress and act like pilgrims? Or better yet, we can go back to the stone age, a time when I could legally club you and feed you to my sabretooth tiger.

one more thing:

"There is much more that a conservative has to do to promote the positive image of productive conservatives and discrete gays in America."

Much more huh? Like polish your swastikas and send minorities to war? Or perhaps there's alot of work to be done to get Haliburton more contracts so they can continue to profit from everyone else's misery?

o, i suppose i could wade through all this and parse the sentences and sever every single one of his arguments, but it wouldn't really be fair. he's so stupid, and not in a cute way.

however, i am fascinated with these "bug-chasing" parties i keep reading about. i've tested positive for about 10 years now, and no one seems to be chasing after me.

i mean, here i am! catch me if you can! notice to all bug-chasers: call me. i'll be there in a hurry.

Why can't so called 'liberals' accept other view points huh? Why is it that 'open minded, liberal thinking people' have to be so judgmental and cruel toward people who have opinions that differ from their own? Isn't that hypocrasy? Give Maurice a break. He has passion for what he believes in. And please don't slam WOW for being an open-minded forum to post this stuff... give me a break...

If this article weren't so slanted and boring I might have finished it. Bonamigo's blabbing is not worth the time. I did happen to skim this however:
"Let me remind the liberal gay community that we do have the same rights and freedoms in the United States that are granted to every citizen of this great nation with the exception of marriage, which should remain between a man and a woman as it was intentionally meant to be from the beginning of time."

So, is this like when marriage was supposed to be kept between a white man and a white woman, the way marriage was supposed to be from the beginning of time??

-- mr.moonlight | September 14, 2005 5:21 PM

no, moonlight, marriage is supposed to be found only where the good lord intended it to be found. on REALITY TV.

the whole institution (gay or straight) is in shambes and it's such a stupid issue to put at the national forefront. if democrats wise up in '08, they'll make sure that the words "gay marriage" and "red state/blue state" are never uttered. they don't realize they're shooting themselves in the groin by letting the republicans dictate language, and the topics of debate. they got played badly in 04. you can't win on the defensive.

as ignorant as most of these conservatives are, i'll give them this, they know how to beat you down.

vote hillary!

Let's see a constitutional amendment denying rights to people based on their genetic structure, I'm not sure but I think there might be recent historical parallel to this....yeah that's right the Nurenberg Laws...I thought it sounded familiar

Rumor has it that later today, George W. Bush is going to announce some staggering dollar figure that our government will spend on the clean-up and restoration of New Orleans and thereabouts. I think that will generally be a good thing, though I'd be happier if part of the plan involved an explanation of just where the money is going to come from. My guess is it will not come from withholding or even postponing any tax cuts for the richest Americans. I'll also hazard a suspicion that an amazing percentage of that money will wind up doing less for the victims of Hurricane Katrina than it will for companies headed by people who have close ties to the Bush administration. They'll do especially fine with reconstruction projects down there since Bush suspended the Minimum Wage Law for such endeavors. Well, I guess it makes sense. It's not like there are workers in Louisiana or Mississippi who need money or health insurance...

-- Bill | September 15, 2005 5:18 AM

OMG, I just puked a little in the back of my throat reading that! Self hate much?!? There are so many things wrong about that entire letter there's really no point in trying to debate or argue it. She's completely lost touch with reality. Sombody please slap her!

-- Leonard LeGrand | September 15, 2005 9:35 AM

Let me get this straight, Britney Spears, J.Lo and Reality TV have done more to undermine the sanctity of marriage than anyone ever thought possible and yet gays and lesbians have to take all the blame and jump the broom instead of getting married? That's totally lame.

I believe marriage is a sacred and as such, the government shouldn't have any part of it. Who is the governement to dictate any of it? The government needs to recognize family units to stabilize our society? Fine, let them issue domestic partner certificates to everyone instead of marriage licenses to so few.

You're right! GW Bush is doing a LOT for us...partner benefits, Social Security compensation...NOT!! GW wants to leave it up to the states to decide and allow us to join the "mainstream". Well if we do that, Mississippi will have slaves again...trust me, civil rights are not something to laugh at and we should not be held back from doing what makes us happy. Don't sell me a cornish game hen and tell me it's a turkey...GW is not helping us.
