Mark Lewis: Animal Magician

Mark Lewis1 Body

Australian documentary filmmaker and friend of WOW, Mark Lewis, has scored a coup with a high profile retrospective of his ouevre on BBC 4. Called Animal Magic: The Films of Mark Lewis, the critter films started their run on the UK channel November 6, but this very bad WOW Report editor forgot to remind you in time to see The Wonderful World of Dogs that night and so has hit himself repeatedly on the snout with a newspaper. ("Sometimes, not that wonderful," says Lewis of the dog doc.) And you feline fanciers have likewise missed out on seeing The Standard of Perfection: Show Cats ("best described as a sort of Best in Show with cats"), which aired yesterday, so we pulled out one of our fingernails on the shag carpeting as punishment.

Still to air, though, and not too late to make a note to watch are Animalicious ("a strange little film that's impossible to define, I have a special fondness for it"), airing next Sunday; The Standard of Perfection: Show Cattle ("who would have guessed that Celebration would go on to win Best Udder?"); Rat ("stories about the most glamorous city and its revered residents"); Cane Toads: An Unnatural History ("god bless them, it's what started it all"); and The Natural History of the Chicken ("everything you never wanted to know about chickens").
