GLAAD Bags GOP
Those log cabins are popping up all over. Soon, there's bound to be a regular gated community of Republican gays. Perhaps it can be in Tempe, Arizona, where they had a gay Republican mayor for four years. That mayor, Neil G Giuliano, has now been appointed president of GLAAD, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. He's kinda cute, in a Queer As Folk kinda way, don't you think? We guess Giuliano can get the word out now to all the other, not so same-sex-minded GOPs that the gays are a swell bunch. To get a better sense of all this, you might want to pick up the award-winning WOW doc, Gay Republicans, out now on DVD. Also, if you're fond of the old-guard musings of Palm Beach's gayest Republican, Maurice Bonamigo, you'll enjoy his upcoming blogging on the Gay Republicans website, located here.

Well said, Randy. It is a reminder for all to remain vigilant about watching whoever's "minding the store." None of us can afford to sit back and assume everyone else is taking care of our best interests.

I hate the way that in america gay rights activists are funnelled down the marriage path, when marriage itself should be on the decline in a progressive society.
In other countries marriage is not the overdetermined legal tangle that it is here and marriage confers no special rights which aren't available to people who instead merely choose to live together. In other developed countries fewer and fewer people are even bothering to going through the ceremony.
If you have a person that you want to nominate for partner benefits then you should be able to nominate whomsoever you like without having to undergo a state sanctioning mumbo jumbo ceremony.
The institution of marriage is totally worn out, it was put in place to assert a bunch of medieval heteropatriarchal morals (ie the prevention of bastardry and observation of probate law) which no really longer apply.

Auntie - But oh the tosters that would not be sold
I still think it is horrifing that a FAMILY of same sex partners have to base where they live on
1)if they will be allowed to adopt if they choose 2)if they will be allowed to care and nurture a child in need as a foster family
3) if they like the idea of being married be able to get married.
I also will not allow my child to join the scouts till they change thier policy on gays you can not teach morality when you underlying that have hate!

Fucking Randy. It's nice to hear someone else acknowledge the TRUE heros of gay rights. Gay repubs are just too scared to be associated with "those kind of queers."
Gay Republicans confuse me in general - how can you grow up gay, yet still lack empathy for other gays. But I guess that's just the flavor of repubs in general...
fuck you all...

African American Republicans are in the same catagory as Gay Republicans. Ok, so you have money now. What about all the people that don't even have health care and still deal with this racist/homophobic goverment? No, as long as their bank accounts are swelling they are A-Ok. It annoys me to see those words, Gay Republicans at the top of the site. Just the thought of people like that makes me sick.

The thing with GLAAD is that they want what is "hot" and "of the moment"- ignoring gays and loving the straights. They want to have a "hot" event- inviting people that will attract press.
I know for a fact many events do this. They ignore the supporters and people who really work hard for them or their cause to make room for people who don't do shit for them, but because they can attract press, they invite celebrities.
I think it would be appropriate for WOW fo write a piece on gayboyric for those who don't know about him. It would make more of a difference to write it up now, then to mention him at the GLAAD awards- for the "invited" few.

ever since GLAAD refused to give gayboyric props when he died a few years back, ive been incredibly ambivilant about them. truth be known, ive been ambivilant about them prior to that. i know that they do lots of good works and i value that, and it also, it gets boring to hear gays complain about gays. but hear i go:
GLAAD refused to even mention gayboyric's passing at any of their annual awards ceremonies. ric had been championing gays in the media for YEARS...before it became fashionable. but apparently he was just too underground for GLAAD.
the year he died WOW bought a table because we had a nominated documentary but after they refused to mention him at any ceremonies we cancelled our table and instead bought an ad in his name.
come to think of it, they also had a difficult time giving rupaul props. i remember years ago, when we managed rupaul, each year they were giving these big awards to straight people and we repeatedly suggested that it might be appropriate to give rupaul an award. you know, an actual gay person! who had always been out.
they finally did, but it was bittersweet, it actually felt that they were giving him an award because they had to.
sooooo, now they have a republican heading up GLAAD. gee, i wonder what we should expect now?
maybe they will go one step further and not just give awards to straight people, but to republican straight people! i know that we can expect to hear more endless drivel about gays and family values. this has been a huge media message with GLAAD that the gays want to get married and have kids and are just like the everyone else....well....i support gay marraige, but i dont support the normalization of gays...the drag queens are the ones we owe our freedoms to. what ive always liked about my gay-ness was how it made me aware of and appreciative of diversity. my personal experience is that this is not a key trait that most republicans cherish. however, i would be very happy to be proven wrong!
