Hidden Figures opened this weekend to rave reviews (it’s certified FRESH from Rotten Tomatoes) and we have five reasons you need to go out and support this film.
5) The Cast
After her brilliant turn in Moonlight, it’s no secret that Janelle Monae is a movie star on the rise (not to say her music hasn’t already solidified her as a famous musician). But she keeps up with the likes of Dunst, Hensen, and Spencer and it’s mesmerizing to watch.
Spencer has the same effect on me as Viola Davis: she opens her mouth and she makes me emotional. She’s incredible in this.
Henson who leads this masterpiece really drives the heart of this film and will inspire the world.
Fresh off her success of Fargo Season 2, Dunst plays the wicked Vivian and it’s fun to see her in a role that she normally isn’t depicted.
4) Women In Math and Science
My sister is a mathematician so this movie really hit close to home for me. It baffles me that this story wasn’t told for over fifty years but it’s amazing the many textured layers of adversity these women had to fight for their place as women of color in the Space program.
3) The Fashion
OK. A bit frivolous, I know, but I want to wear every outfit Monae dons in this film.
2) The Message
Segregation and slavery will always be two of America’s finest embarrassments. I teared up a lot for the majority of the film but the scene that really got me was when Henson explains why she’s gone for forty minutes about twice a day because she has to run to the “other” bathroom which is in the East building (she works in the West building), so when Costner knocks down the sign and throws away the “other” coffee pot, it shows that we had a lot of work to do then, and we will have more work to do today.
1) The Future Is Female
Plain and simple: the future is female. What an exciting (true life) story about women!!! The fact that Hensen had to rework the final degrees for the Friendship shuttle, co-sign her name on all her reports (even though she did all the work), that Spencer had to basically teach herself an entire new program not only to solidify job security, but so she could take her whole team of women with her is empowering.
Go out and support these women and this film!
