Salvador Sobral represented Portugal in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest and won with the song Amar Pelos Dois, the title of which means “Love for both”.
The song was written by Sobral’s sister, Luisa, who finished third in Portugal’s version of American Idol. In his acceptance speech, Sobral said music was not disposable,
“Music is not fireworks, music is feeling, so let’s try to do this and bring music back which is what matters.”
Sobral won with the highest possible score from the judges and the second highest score from the public vote with a song sung entirely in Portuguese.
The acts in the finals were announced in no particular order; Moldova, Azerbaijan, Greece, Sweden, Portugal, Poland, Armenia, Australia, Cyprus and Belgium.
Portugal has taken part in Eurovision a total of 48 times since their first appearance in 1964, being the longest running contestants never to have won.
