Blogging Makes A Difference!Saturday, April 23, 2011 06:12 AM tags: A Real Repeal?, Don't Ask Don't Tell, Making A Difference!, Military Non-Discrimination Clauses
I have just been informed that if you google the term “military non-discrimination clauses” two of my reports for WOW on President Obama's continued refusal to support inclusion of sexual orientation as a protected class under the military non-discrimination clauses are the top two articles that Google links to! And though I definitely take pride in the fact that my reports are apparently reaching more than just the regular WOW readers, I am still very much aware of how many Americans (even within the gay community) are woefully under informed about the true state of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Many seem to believe that the policy has been successfully repealed. It has not. Sadly, DADT remains the law of the land and several hundred gay soldiers continued to be discharged through the DADT policy in 2010. Investigations and interrogations of gay soldiers who try to serve openly and honestly continue to this day, and President Obama still refuses to support the inclusion of sexual orientation under the military's equal opportunity (MEO) policy - which includes protections against discrimination on race, color, national origin, religion, and sex. And just last week, President Obama barred gay soldiers and their family members (as well as any of their civilian representatives) from the "Joining Forces" initiative that supposedly honors America's military service members and their families, and he used Don't Ask Don't Tell as his excuse for barring them (despite the fact that DADT does not apply to civilians from gay advocacy and service organizations).
