Snap! Art Basel BasicThursday, December 09, 2010 04:42 PM
Phil Tarley, our man in Miami, writes:
Poolside in South Beach with a heavenly art hangover that I don't want to get over. Art Basel Miami Beach. Sales were good, much better than expected. Art crating and shipping is transiting the works to happy collectors who are waiting for their purchases. All the champagne parties have bubbled away. And what I'm left with is the ash of a wicked week of amazing photography, video, and contemporary art – all basking in the glow of the celebrity aura in which Miami wraps itself for five deliciously demented days. This snap of Julian Schnabel and Sean Penn is from last Thurday night's Maybach-Damiler rooftop party for JS, atop Miami Beach's most impressive new building, Frank Geary's New World Symphony. The Maybach party was a benefit for Sean Penn's Haitian Relief Organization. Schanbel – who didn't dress for his own party – was pegged by Maybach to erect a giant white phalluslike sculpture, which is anchored to the entrance of the building. Staged by Jose Zaldivar, Miami party planner-to-the-stars, Maybach's guests danced to a hot Cuban band under the Floridian moonlight. This is year eight for ABMB, the Olympics of art shows. The story continues. So stay tuned. (Photo by Billy Farrell/Forbes PR)
