Fran Crippen, a much-liked medal-winning open-water swimmer on the US national team, died Saturday during a 10-kilometer marathon World Cup race in Fujairah, UAE. He was 26. Crippen, who comes from a well-known family of swimmers in Philadelphia, apparently died of severe exhaustion on the last leg of the race, according to the official report, though it's thought the 85-degree water might have been a factor. Earlier reports said the cause of death was a heart attack. Swimming World magazine reported that the Olympic-hopeful lost consciousness in the water and was found by deep-sea divers two hours later near the race's final buoy. (via CNN)
