Towards the end of yesterday I began to receive texts that read Ari Up died. As I drove home I wondered if this was true or just rumor that went wild on Facebook. I also began thinking about the first time I heard Ari Up and her band the Slits. It was sometime in high school on a mixtape, of course. From that day on, the way I thought about punk was forever changed. It is crazy to think that Ari Up was only 14 years old when the Slits first formed. In the five years that the Slits were together they left a lasting impression and influence on punk like no other band did. Ari Up was only 48 when she died yesterday. Her family released a statement saying the singer had passed away of a serious illness. A big thank you to Ari Up for staying true to who she was and inspiring girls and boys alike for years to come. She will be missed.
