GetEQUAL, the LGBT equality activists group staged an elaborate “by land, air, and sea” protest of President Obama’s pathetic record on enacting equal rights for gay Americans and ending the discriminatory “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. President Obama attended a private Democratic fund-raiser in Miami at the home of NBA star Alonzo Mourning.
As the president headed to the fundraiser, where donors had paid as much as $5,000 and $18,000 per person to see him, members of GetEqual along with local activists lined the street holding four 10-foot signs that read “End the Discharges Now” and “We’ll Give When We GetEQUAL” – a reference to the group’s recent campaign encouraging people not to donate money to either the Democratic or Republican parties until the president signs an executive order immediately stopping the discharges. The motorcade was greeted by chants of "Stop the Discharges" and "What Do We Want? Equality! When do we want it? NOW!" The protest also included boats in the harbor outside the fundraiser, with loudspeakers blaring Barack Obama’s quotes from previous speeches calling for the repeal of DADT, as well as large weather balloons set aloft with huge vertical GetEQUAL banners (the banners were apparently clearly visible to the fine folks dining on elegantly upscale fare at the fancy Democratic party.
