Glowstick Vigil For LGBT YouthSunday, October 03, 2010 08:10 PM
No one likes to go out in the rain, but sometimes on a sad night it can be a blessing. The rain can hide your tears. And even though tonight's event was a somber occasion, I was still happy to see such a large turnout for the the Glowstick Vigil For LGBT Youth in Washington Square Park. Sadly and far too often only a few of the usual suspects tend to show up for these type of events. But the tragic and recent deaths of six young LGBT kids has once again galvanized our community and brought some much need awareness to the issue and dangers of anti-gay bullying. There was a large crowd in attendance. NYC Council Speaker Christine Quinn spoke to the crowd as did Governor David Paterson. The governor gave an uplifting speech about being bullied and growing up blind and how those experiences would one day lead to a strong solidarity with the gay community.
