Banksy HeistWednesday, April 14, 2010 03:49 PM
Yesterday morning, Ace Gallery's Doug Christmas masterminded the theft and unauthorized sale of guerilla graffiti artist Banksy's piece, Guard on Duty, which had been affixed haphazardly to a wall somewhere in Los Angeles. Rather conveniently, the theft-in-progress was caught on camera. Of course, there's some irony in the act of stealing an image of a security guard on duty, and a certain amount of street justice involved in a graffiti artist having his own work stolen or vandalized. If you pretend to the street, you have to live by the street's rules, yo. Meanwhile, the LA Weekly says Doug Christmas has been sued 55 times by artists, dealers, and collectors for crimes against art. Now, that's street. (via Animal)
