Indian Transgender Beauty Pageant Has a Good CasteThursday, February 04, 2010 03:00 PM
They're gonna sashay in Bombay when India's very first transgender beauty pageant takes place in Mumbai on February 6. Auditions have been held all over India – in Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Kolkata – leading up to Saturday's big "Indan Super Queen" contest. "It is not about who is the best and most aesthetically beautiful," said Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, a transgender activist and CEO of Twelve Noon Entertainment. "It's about who is willing to proudly display their character, take pride in who they are and to prove that they are just as 'human' as all of us.” In other words, it's all about their charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent, as a certain WOW supermodel likes to say. "The community has had to stay in the closet for 262 years and this contest will provide them a platform," said Laxmi. (BBC; t/y Wendy)
