Chris Farley: Dead and Earning a LivingTuesday, October 27, 2009 07:34 AM
You've seen this commercial for Direct TV – a manipulated clip from Tommy Boy where David Spade shills for the subscriber satellite service while Chris Farley does his dim-witted fat man shtick and you've probably thought how insensitive and macabre it is to get a man who died of a messy OD in 1997 to endorse a product without his OK. In fact, Spade has come under attack in some quarters for selling out his old buddy. Asylum got this statement from Spade via his publicist: "When Direct TV came to me and the Farley family with this idea about 'Tommy Boy,' we talked and thought it would be a cool way to remind people just how funny Chris was. It is a clever homage to my friend and a movie that we loved doing." We're thinking a cooler way for people to remember just how funny Chris was is to rent his movies and watch his old SNL sketches.
