Lourdes WatchWednesday, September 30, 2009 10:41 AM
It's just an ordinary outfit that any ordinary teenage girl might wear: mini, tights, legwarmers, a pair of Chucks, a couple of rubber bracelets, some retro hipster glasses. And yet on Lourdes each of those items takes on a deeper meaning, each becomes a signifier, a look into the woman she's becoming. Why would she choose '80s retro when her mother DEFINED the era? Wouldn't you go with '70s or '90s or 1880s just to piss her off? Just to establish yourself as something more than a mini-me? And isn't it funny that a happy face is dangling next to her "worried face"? Why IS she biting her nails like that? Is stepping out with Mama Madonna a cause for embarrassment? And those big hipster glasses that are obscuring her mono-brow. Is that on purpose? Has it been tweezed yet? Has Mama set a date in stone when that can happen? ("Not until you are 17! I couldn't even wear LIPGLOSS until I was 24!") And most important: Does Lourdes even realize how fascinating she is to us, or is she still caught up in the usual "teen girl" angst? Is her look thought out or thrown-together? Oh, she's such a little cipher! (Pic via Splash)
