Susan Atkins, perpetrator of arguably the most heinous of the seven murders during the Manson family's infamous 1969 two-day killing spree in Los Angeles, died yesterday of brain cancer at the Central California Women's Facility in Chowchilla. She was 61. Atkins, who was known as Sadie Mae Glutz to the family, admitted to stabbing eight-months-pregnant Sharon Tate 16 times, while the actress pleaded for her baby to be spared. "I told her I didn't have any mercy on her," Atkins said. After the stabbing, she wrote "PIG" in blood on the front door of the house. Sentenced to death in 1971, Atkins became California's longest-serving female inmate. In prison, she became a born-again Christian and worked to help at-risk youth, victims of violent crimes, and homeless children. Oh. Well. That makes up for it. (ABC; photos: AP, Reuters)
