The Option and The GiftThursday, September 10, 2009 04:25 AM
President Obama delivered a forceful speech on the battle for health care reform yesterday. Say what you will about Obama, but the man knows how to give a good speech. He was very confident and passionate but when it came to substance and specifics the president offered very little new details. As far as the most contentious item on the agenda, plans for the public option, were once again muffled and unspecific. Obama seems to support the idea of a public option, but feels it is not essential, only a means to an end. The president believes “we should remain open” to other ideas that achieve the ultimate goal. But if complete coverage for all Americans is the goal, what other ideas besides the public option will achieve it? Obama proved once again that with preparation he can give a good speech. But will his speech making abilities help to pass healthcare reform when he refuses to draw a line in the sand and clearly state what it is he is fighting for? During the election, Candidate Obama made it clear what was on the agenda, yet as president, Obama’s vision has become more than murky. But for now, the president can rest easy for a few days. The Republican Rep. from South Carolina, Joe Wilson, gave Obama the gift of some valuable time and even helped Obama to temporarily unite the Democrats last night by shouting out “You Lie” at Obama during his speech. Much political hay is being made from the outburst and the Democrats and political pundits will be squawking about it for days. Hopefully the president will use that time to finally get specific and decide what exactly it is that he is fighting for – Health care reform, or his re-election.
