Shocking Treatment in China

China's Ministry of Health has ordered a hospital in the eastern Shandong province to stop its use of electroshock therapy to cure youths of Internet addiction. It seems 10 percent of the country's under-18 population can't stop logging on. Tthe Ministry says there's no clinical evidence anywhere supporting the notion that electroshocking is effective in ending addiction and the hospital, cowed by the Ministry's order, has stopped using the procedure. The hospital had so far treated 3,000 kids in four-month programs at $805 a month. Psychologists in China say symptoms of Internet addiction include being online more than six hours a day, playing games and looking at pornography rather than working or studying, and getting angry when unable to get online.
