A nine-year investigation released on Wednesday of Ireland’s Roman Catholic-run reform schools has concluded that male priests were responsible for the rape and abuse of thousands of young boys. The investigation, which was resisted by the Catholic Church, also uncovered previously secret Vatican documents that showed the church was fully aware that active and sadistic pedophile priests were within their ranks as far back as the 1930’s. The report also concluded that church officials protected their orders' pedophiles from exposure and arrest amid a culture of self-serving secrecy. The brutal rape and molestation of young boys continued unabated until the early 1990’s. The Catholic religious orders had run more than 50 workhouse-style reform schools for young boys starting in the late 19th century.
